Living legend of global flat racing, John Gosden is also a highly respected voice throughout the racing world. In his long list of victories, he notably counts a win in the Qatar Prix du Jockey Club (Gr.1) with Mishriff (in 2020). This horse later became a great international champion and one of the richest racehorses in history (over 13 million euros in earnings from age 2 to 5). Mishriff now stands at stud in France at Haras de Sumbe, where he is in high demand among European breeders. The year following Mishriff’s victory at Chantilly, John Gosden partnered with his son Thady. The ambition this Sunday is therefore for the pair to win a first Jockey Club together as associates. Father and son will present two colts on Sunday at Chantilly. That includes Detain, who ran in the Emirates Poule d’Essai des Poulains without being placed. And also Bowmark, a relatively unexposed colt who will thus discover the highest level of competition directly in the French classic.
HIS QUOTES
Extracts from the press conference organised by France Galop
« For Detain, we had the Qatar Prix du Jockey Club in mind even before his race in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains. During his first attempt at Longchamp, he finished well in a race that went very fast from the start. He confirmed that he can handle the distance, even if he is not a real stayer, unlike his half-brother Arrest, who is by Frankel, while he is by Wootton Bassett and thus has more speed. His preparation after the trip to France went well. He only has one bad race in his career, in the Futurity Trophy (Gr1), but with many excuses. Indeed, it was his first time on turf and the ground was really heavy. We are very happy to be able to count on a top-class jockey like Christophe Soumillon. The only issue may come from the ground, like everyone I hope it will be good-to-soft on Sunday. »
« Bowmark is a very well-bred colt, his dam is a sister to the Derby winner Serpentine. He has not yet shown all his talent, he is very lightly raced. He has run three times and has never gone beyond a mile. Bowmark won easily on his debut in December and won the Burredon Stakes, a Listed race on the all-weather. That day, he faced slightly more experienced rivals. After taking the lead, he was a bit lost and finished second. We then sent him to York where he discovered turf. He won like a very good colt, from start to finish. William Buick came to ride him in the morning and told us that he should handle the distance without any problem. It is very difficult to choose between our two runners before the race. They have very different profiles. Detain has already travelled, while for Bowmark it’s the first time. I want to wait for the draw... »
