ABAMA (F2), FRA by Alhebayeb ex Iffraaja (Iffraaj)

Prix d’Avranches ( (Maiden 2yo Fillies, 1,200m/6F), July 30, Deauville

Owner: Malcolm Parrish
Trainer: Yann Barberot
Breeders: Thierry de la Héronnière et Jedburgh Stud
Rider: Stéphane Pasquier

Abama (Alhebayeb) finished 6th in both her first races over 7 furlongs at Saint-Cloud and Clairefontaine. The first time, she led all the way only to give up in the last furlong. The second time, she came from the rear and gave the impression she was about to take the lead before she faded one out. Shortening the distance was a no-brainer for Deauville trainer Yann Barberot and it proved him right!

The filly followed the early leader Aficionado (Cable Bay) and took off two out to win comfortably by more than a length. La Pentola (Planteur) came on her own in the centre and looked like a potential winner but merely stayed on in 3rd.

The fillies went roughly as fast as the colts did earlier that day in the Prix Irish River.

Abama was paid € 55,000 at Arqana v2 yearling sales by French bloodstock agent Paul Nataf. Haras d’Ellon, managed by the filly's joint-breeder Thierry de la Héronnière, will consign her Kendargent brother this month at Deauville.

Abama's sprinting ability is not surprising since her unraced dam is a sister to Great Minds (Bahamian Bounty), a Listed winner over 5 furlongs, and their dam Pipalong (Pip’s Pride) won the Haydock Park Sprint Cup (Gr1) over 6 furlongs, and finished 5rd twice in the Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp (Gr1) over 5 furlongs...

L’ANGE DE MINUIT (C2), (IRE) by Dark Angel ex Spring Wave (Dr Fong)

Prix Irish River (Maiden 2yo colts & geldings, 1,200m/6F), July 30, Deauville

Owner: Isabelle Corbani
Trainer: Stéphane Wattel
Breeder: Haras de la Pérelle
Rider: Théo Bachelot

Bumped and boxed in for his debut on July 8 over the same course and distance, and eventually 4th to the promising Young Man, L’Ange de Minuit (Dark Angel) was this time allowed to give his best and that's the least he had to do to overcome the front-running Matello (Intello), who he had followed since the start and finished second beaten over a length. Fast in the leading group, Hernan (Bated Breath) hung on in third half a length down. Fourth-placed Sky Power (Stormy River) finished well, only beaten a neck, and so did the fifth-placed Chambonas (Wootton Bassett), since the front runners were quite fast with the last three furlongs timed 11’’17, 11’’14 and 11’’83…

Bred by Haras de la Pérelle, L’Ange de Minuit was sold €140,000 € at the Deauville sales to Chantilly Bloodstock (Gérard Larrieu). His Kodiac brother is in Arqana August sale catalogue.

L’Ange de Minuit is out of Spring Wave (Dr Fong), a sister to the Italian Derby winner Gentlewave (Monsun), and the dam of Spring Leaf (Footstepsinthesand), a Listed-winner in Deauville over the all-weather, and a second in the Prix Pénélope (Gr3), and in the Swiss Derby!

SCHWESTERHERZ (F2), FRA by Areion ex Nouvelle Noblesse (Singspiel)

Arqana Prix de Lisieux (Unraced 2yo fillies, 1,200m / 6F), July 28, Deauville

Owner: Eckhard Sauren
Trainer: Henk Grewe
Breeder: Eckhard Sauren
Rider: Antoine Hamelin

The feminine equivalent to the Arqana Prix de Tancarville run on Sunday on a very soft course (4,0), this Arqana Prix de Lisieux for juvenile colts was raced over a good to soft turf (3,4), hence the 3 seconds advance of the fillies on Sunday with the German-trained French-bred Schwesterherz (Areion) at the end of this 6 furlongs straight trip.

The winning filly was first out of the starting stalls but soon let the leaders pass by to settle next to the favourite Khayzaraan (Kingman), who was unlucky at about halfway. A few fillies were in contention for the race with one furlong to go but as soon as she came by the pacesetting Jessely (Charm Spirit) and her main rival Vintern (Frankel), who seemed to have taken over, Schwesterherz took off and was never in trouble. Trained by Henk Grewe, she won by over a length over a brave Jessely and Be Ahead (Dream Ahead), another tough filly, third a head ahead of Vintern and an eyecatching Fry (Zoffany).

Schwesterherz was bred in Normandy by her owner Eckhard Sauren, who bought her back €52,000 at the Baden-Baden yearlings sale. Her dam Nouvelle Noblesse (Singpsiel) foaled in total 7 winners after winning the Premio Dormello (Gr3) at 2 over the mile. She also gave a Kendargent filly bred in 2018 in France.

DEVIL (C2), (IRE) by Siyouni ex Burma Sea (Lope de Vega)

Arqana Prix de Tancarville (Unraced 2yo colts & geldings, 1,200m / 6F), July 27, Deauville

Owners: Wertheimer & Frère
Trainer: Freddy Head
Breeders: Wertheimer & Frère
Rider: Maxime Guyon

Easy win for Devil (Siyouni) in a very coveted maiden race early in the Deauville Summer meeting. They were 8 at the start and still 5 in contention for victory 300 yards out, but they soon gave up any hope as Devil was gaining momentum, leaving the leading JuliusJuliusson (War Front) bravely stay on for the second place at one length and a half while Golden Boy (Siyouni), a pleasing third only beat by a short neck.

Devil passed the post on the bit. The Wertheimer & Frère homebred is the first foal out of Burma Sea (Lope de Vega), a mare bred by Gestüt Ammerland sold €350,000 at the 2015 Arc sale.

Burma Sea finished 2nd in the Prix Finlande (L) after her only win, but her dam Bougainvillea (Acatenango) was a full sister to the great mare Borgia. Since Devil, Burma Sea gave an Invincible Spirit filly and a Camelot colt.

HONOR BÉRÉ (C2), FRA by Pedro the Great ex Shadow of the Day (Until Sundown)

Prix des Colonnes Morris  (Maiden 2-year-old colts & geldings, 1,400m/7F), July 18, ParisLongchamp

Owner: Gérard Augustin-Normand
Trainer: Jean-Claude Rouget
Breeder: SAS Régnier et San Gabriel Inv.
Rider: Hugo Journiac

Third over 6 1/2 furlongs at Craon for his debut, finishing well from off the pace, Honor Béré (Pedro the Great) took the lead this time alongside Panda Seven (Wootton Bassett) and he narrowly won as the field rushed, in the end, to fail by small margins.

Honor Béré was sold € 40,000 to Jean-Claude Rouget at Osarus last Summer sales at La Teste. Bred by Alain Régnier and Emmanuel de Seroux, he was consigned by the Haras de la Haie Neuve that the former recently entrusted to Tangi Saliou. The dam, Shadow of the Day (Until Sundown), won a handicap in Deauville with a rating of 65 and mostly ran in claimers after that. However, she foaled the winners Diva Bere (Hurricane Cat), Fabulous Bere (Pedro the Great) and Gina Bere (Hurricane Cat). A filly by Style Vendome is to follow.

It's the family of Rail Link, Crossharbour and Linda's Lad.

SECRET TIME (F2), (GER) by Camacho ex Song of Time (Kheleyf)

Prix des Fontaines Wallace (Maiden 2-year-old fillies, 1,400m/7F), July 18, ParisLongchamp

Owner: Giacomo Algranti
Trainer: Fabrice Chappet
Breeder: Gestuet Kussaburg
Rider: Hugo Journiac

Noticed for her debut at Saint-Cloud over 6 furlongs, finishing well in fourth coming from the rear, Secret Time (Camacho) once again finished strongly to beat Rouge Terre (Siyouni), one of the leaders who'd beaten her first time out.

Secret Time was paid € 130,000 Arqana Deauville sale in 2018, consigned by Julie Mestrallet's Haras de l’Aumônerie, after a €13,000 sale as a weanling at the same venue. Her dam won once and gave two colts before who never won.

STARIFIQUE (F3), (IRE) by Sea the Stars ex Sapphire Pendant (Danehill Dancer)

Prix de la Barrière du Roule (3-year-old maidens, 2,100m/10F1/2), July 18, ParisLongchamp

Owners: Wertheimer & Frère
Trainer: Carlos Laffon-Parias
Breeders: Wertheimer & Frère
Rider: Stéphane Laurent

Third for her debut in May over an extended mile-and-a-quarter trip at Saint-Cloud, Starifique (Sea The Stars) finished second after that over one mile and a half before this first win, back over 2,100m. She beats Sabi River (Invincible Spirit) by a neck. The two fillies led the field with Starifique holding the rail to fend off her challenger's assault.

Sapphire Pendant (Danehill Dancer), Starifique's dam, was paid £ 480,000 by the Wertheimers at Tattersalls Breeding sale back in 2012. She had raced for Coolmore, who'd bought her for € 300,000 at Deauville. A winner for her debut, second after that in the One Thousand Guineas Trial (Gr3) at Leopardstown, she failed three times before going off training and went for sale before she could even breed. Her price tag is down to her 2nd dam, probably, Blush With Pride (Blushing Groom), a Kentucky Oaks (Gr1) winner who is closely related to two Belmont Stakes (Gr1) winners, Rags To Riches and Jazil.

The two elder brothers of Starifique are geldings, and a 2-year-old colt by Lope de Vega is in training with Carlos Laffon-Parias, who entered him for a July 27th debut in Deauville. There is also an Intello yearling.

ALL RUMOURS (F3), FRA by Shamardal ex Aquamarine (Deep Impact)

Prix Topyo (3-year-old maiden, 1,800m/9f), July 13, Maisons-Laffitte

Owner: Ballymore Thoroughbred
Trainer: André Fabre
Breeder: Dayton Investments
Rider: Pierre-Charles Boudot

Once entered in the Diane and the Saint-Alary (Gr1s), All Rumours (Shamardal) finished 8th for her debut in May at Saint-Cloud over a mile. A month latrer, she finished 3rd at Compiegne, less than a length and a half behind Mutamakina, who has won a Listed event at Vichy lately. All Rumours finally found her race on the straight 9 furlongs-trip.

Kept at the rear by Pierre-Charles Boudot, she came out in the middle of the course and scored pretty handily, beating another Wildenstein filly, Lamu (Sea the Stars), who got the dream trip by the rail behind the brave front-running Makfra (Makfi).

Aquamarine (Deep Impact), All Rumours's dam, won the Prix Allez France (Gr3) for the Wildensteins. She gave All Stars (Sea the Stars), her first foal, sold as a maiden out of training for € 25,000 to agent Paul Nataf at Arqana sales last December.

Her third dam is Albertine (Irish River), a Prix de l'Opera 3rd also bred by Daniel Wildenstein who gave the Breeders'Cup Classic victor Arcangues (Sagace), and Agathe, dam of the classic filly Aquarelliste, of Afrique Bleue Azur, who gave the One Thousand Guineas winner Cape Verdi, or Ange Bleu (Alleged), dam of the US champion mare Angara (Alzao), etc.

After All Rumours, Aquamarine gave Ultramarine (Siyounj), bought for € 200,000 € as a yearling and trained by Jean-Claude Rouget for Denford Stud, the breeding operation of Prince Faisal bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, governor of the province of Medina!

MARIETA (F2), FRA by Siyouni ex Macarella (Shamardal)

Prix Idalie (2-year-olds' maiden, 1,200m/6f), July 13, Maisons-Laffitte

Owner: Cuadra Mediterraneo
Trainer: Mauricio Delcher-Sanchez
Breeder: Cuadra Mediterraneo
Rider: Tony Piccone

Fast ahead, Marieta (Siyouni) completely dominated the field and won by eight lengths. Trained by Mauricio Delcher-Sanchez, she had to do with a second place for her debut on the same course, on June 19 over 1,100 metres. Fantastic Diamond, who had beaten her that day, is entered in the Prix des Rêves d’Or-Jacques Bouchara (L) at Vichy and in the Darley Prix de Cabourg (Gr3) at Deauville. But this time, Marieta put eight lengths between her and Reconquista (Dark Angel), whom she beat by only half a length for her first race. The longer trip is probably not for much in the difference as the game was aleready over one furlong out.

Marieta is out of Macarella (Shamardal), who also ran for the Madrilenian syndicate Cuadra Mediterraneo managed by Jose Maria Maldonado and has already given Cigalera (Elusive City), third in May of the Prix Texanita (Gr3). Macarella, bought for £ 52,000 in England, is from the family of Satwa Queen and Spadoun, Group 1-winning siblings. She won over 6 furlongs at Fontainebleau once, also trained by Mauricio Delcher. She gave a Shalaa colt in 2018.

YOUNG MAN (C2), FRA by Dabirsim ex Diamond Flawless (Cape Cross)

Prix de Saint-Hymer (Unraced 2-year-olds, 1,200m/6f), July 8, Deauville

Owner: Victoria Dreams
Trainer: Jean-Philippe Dubois
Breeder: Jean-Philippe Dubois
Rider: Gérald Mossé

An easier win that it looks on paper with a short neck victory for Young Man (Dabirsim), ridden early by Gérald Mossé to prevent a bad surprise, but a high gaited colt with lots of ability under the bonnet.

Jean-Philippe Dubois bred, owns and trains Young Man who beat the front-running Mangkhut (Sommerabend) while Wedding Present (Dream Ahead), always well placed by the rail behind the leader but unable to accelerate in the end.

Young Man is out of the unraced Diamond Flawless (Cape Cross), also bred by Jean-Philippe Dubois and unold at €76,000 as a yearling at the Deauville October 2011 sales. Young Man's elder but unraced sister Elusive Action (Elusive City) could find a buyer only 5 days before this at Arqana Summer Sale, in foal to Martinborough. Born between those two, Miss Flawless (Siyouni) won three races and was sold to America.

Diamond Flawless is out of Dee Flawless (Linamix), a full sister to Prix Greffulhe (Gr2) winner Diamond Mix (Linamix), amongst others.

THUNDERSPEED (C2), FRA by Night of Thunder ex Marmoom Lover (Cape Cross)

Prix de Marolles (Unraced 2-year-old Colts & Geldings, 1,400m/7f), July 3, Deauville

Owner: Écurie Gribomont
Trainer: Christophe Ferland
Breeder: Écurie Gribomont
Rider: Julien Augé

Spotted early next to the front-)running Chambonas (Wootton Bassett), Thunderspeed (Night of Thunder) took the edge at the right point and kept off Eté de Carl (Sommerabend) and Monte Cinto (Make Believe), beaten almost two lengths

Thunderspeed's dam Marmoom Lover (Cape Cross) raced at first for Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum but passed on to Belgian owner Jean-François Gribomont after her maiden win at Toulouse over 1m4f. Born in January, she would go on until the nedn of her 5-year-old season and scored five times, mostly in handicaps, in 32 races. She won her best handicap with a 71lbs tag.

Thunderspeed is her 4th foal and her 2nd winner. He was unsold €40,000 at Arqana as a yearling. Since then, her dam gave a Prince Gibraltar colt.

MAGEVA (F2), (GB) by Wootton Bassett ex Melilot (Elusive City)

Prix de Firfol (Unraced 2-year-old Fillies, 1,400m/7f), July 3, Deauville

Owners: Hubert Guy, Antoine Gilibert, Gilles Barbarin & Benoît Chalmel
Trainer: Fabrice Chappet
Breeder: EARL Haras de Saint-James
Rider: Stéphane Pasquier

The leading Mageva (Wootton Bassett) took off early in the straight and edged left when hard ridden to keep going as the field was following the rail, and she ket on responding to keep a short head over Vienne (Showcasing).

Mageva is the first foal out of Melilot (Elusive City). She was paid € 75,000 € by bloodstock agent Hubert Guy, who's now part-owner, at the Arqana August Sale in 2018.

Her dam never won but she's a sister to Pride Dancer (Fasliyev), a Prix Herod (L) winner over 7 furlongs who also finished 3rd in the Senorita Stakes (Gr3) in California.

After Mageva, Melilot gave an Outstrip yearling filly.

SKYWARD (C3), FRA by Camelot ex Shakeyourbody (Giant’s Causeway)

Prix du Cochet (Unraced 3-year-olds, 1,900m AWT), July 3, Deauville

Owner: Arno Curty
Trainer: Fabrice Chappet
Breeder: Aleyrion Bloodstock
Rider: Stéphane Pasquier

Entered as early as March, even in the QIPCO Prix du Jockey Club, Skyward (Camelot) belated his debut until July over Deauville's All-Weather. Fast ahead, he veered left in the end and was looking like he couldn't cop one furlong out but Pasquier got him right in balance again and he took off again to score comfortably by one length and a half over Green Siren (Siyouni), who finished well. Favourite Camusot (Mastercraftsman) only stayed on in third by the rail.

Bred by Aleyrion Bloodstock, Skyward was paid £ 170,000 at Tattersalls October sales in 2017. He's a brother to the good Siyoushake (Siyouni), second in the Darley Prix Jean Romanet (Gr1) after winning the Prix Quincey Barrière (Gr3), and to Pleasemetoo (Vale of York), a Prix d’Aumale (Gr3) 2nd in 2015 for Jean-Etienne Dubois. The dam has since been exported to Australia.

Main entries : Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris (Gr1)
