The Haras d'Etreham - Prix Jean Prat (Gr1) is the first Gr.1 of Deauville’s summer meeting. Since 2019, the contest has been disputed over 1.400m. The Irish-trained Tenebrism is the first filly to land the "Jean Prat" over the adjusted distance! This success also offered both, English jockey Ryan Moore and Tenebrism’s Irish-born trainer Aidan O’Brien, a first victory in the race. Ownership of the filly is split three ways between Westerberg, leading Irish stud Coolmore and the American-based Merribelle Stables.

Westerberg is the name given to the horses owned by Georg von Opel. Born in Germany, and grandson of the creator of car manufacturer Opel, Georg von Opel resides in the United Kingdom. He has also been co-owner of the winner of the Epsom Oaks (Gr1) and the Prix Saint-Alary (Gr1).

Merribelle Stables is the name given to the association of Americans, John Moores and Charles Noell, who are both extremely active on both sides of the Atlantic.

Tenebrism’s dam is well-known in France. Trained in Chantilly by Robert Collet, the champion Immortal Verse won both the Coronation Stakes (Gr1) at Royal Ascot and the Prix Jacques le Marois (Gr1) at Deauville’s summer meeting!

Bred in the Calvados (14) region by Barbara Moser, Light Infantry took second place for her English connection. Filling the third spot was Lusail, also trained in England.

What they said ...

Ryan Moore (rider of Tenebrism, 1st)

“She has always shown plenty, she won the Cheveley Park on her second start over six furlongs. She went to Newmarket for the 1,000 Guineas and the ground was very fast, she got battered around and she never went into any rhythm at all. She ran a good race at Ascot, she was still a little bit green, just struggled around the bend. She had to wait for a gap today but as soon she got a little bit of room, she accelerated straightforward. She’s by Caravaggio who was fast. She is a pleasure to ride. She is very comfortable at seven furlongs.”

David Simcock (trainer of Light Infantry, 2nd)

“We are really pleased. We thought the seven furlongs on the fast ground would be against him. He ran really well at Newmarket, better than his finishing position suggested. We came here hoping for a good run and that’s what we got. I like to think he has a bright future and he will definitely be better at a mile. Hopefully, he will come back here in August, we will have a look at the Jacques-le-Marois. He is very straightforward, a very talented horse and he is something to look forward to… How long we will keep forward we don’t know but we are going to enjoy it while it lasts. He handles any ground.”

Richard Hannon  (trainer of Lusail, 3rd)

“The mixed tempo of the race may have cost us the win. Other than that, there is nothing more to say. Lusial is very consistent and will almost certainly win us another big one soon. He is a lovely colt and will most likely head for the Lennox Stakes (Gr2), or the Sussex Stakes (Gr1). We will discuss it with his owners. »

Christophe Ferland (trainer of Accakaba, 4th)

« I am torn somewhere between satisfied and disappointed to not have won. I love this filly. Accakaba has an exceptional turn of foot and what she did today was amazing! Before the race, I was hoping for a big performance. It was a proper race, with the best horses at 1.400m and 1.600m. It would have been nice to secure third place for her future as a broodmare. Even still, we are satisfied. Accakaba will now head towards the Prix Maurice de Gheest (Gr1). »

Charlie Appleby (trainer of Modern Games, 5th)

“We have got caught for a turn of foot, dropping back to seven furlongs. In the end, we know the mile is his best trip but trying to find a mile race for him at this time of the year… We will have to wait obviously the Sussex or the Jacques Le Marois, both to take into consideration. Potentially, he could run in the Sussex with Coroebus or the Marois with Native Trail. A mile is really his trip and we knew we were going to be maybe not vulnerable but we were going to meet horses with that speed that comes over at the end. As always, he ran a very solid race.”
