October 9, 2022, Auteuil Racecourse (Paris). – Favourite for her comeback in the €120,000 Maisons-Laffitte 4yo Hurdle Race (Gr3), Hawai du Berlais (Martaline) kept her helm at the top of her generation, but the Alain du Breil (Gr1) looked a bit under a cloud for a while. The leading group was made of Mister Vision (Vision d’État), Ines du Chenet (Spanish Moon), Bathyscaphe (Bahyrhon), Imperial Mag (Kapgarde) and Ine Anjou (Balko), while Hawai du Berlais looked somewhat outpaced in the back straight. Still 5th in the final turn, but well back in contention, she had joined the leading line at the 2nd last jump. At the very last hurdle, only Imperial Mag and Ine Anjou were still going with her for the win, the former jumping faster than the others. The Bryant family champion had to outsprint her rival to get her and beat her by 2 lengths, Ine Anjou staying on in third at three lengths, two lengths ahead of Mister Vision.

West End Girl (Great Pretender) and Norville (Air Chief Marshall), respectively second and third in the « Alain du Breil », were never in contention here.

Hawai has now won 6 of her 8 races. Last Autumn, she ducked from the boys in the Cambacérès 3-year-old Hurdle race (Gr1) as her trainer elected to keep her record clean with a third win in the Haras d’Étreham Magalen Bryant 3-year-old Fillies Hurdle race (Gr2). Yet, the filly got beat by Kyrov and then Ine Anjou for her first two trials this term, but she ran to her true form again in time for the big one.

Hawai du Berlais was bred by Jean-Marc Lucas at Haras du Berlais. She is the second foal out of Hilton du Berlais (Saint des Saints), a Gr3 winner over hurdles at Auteuil, and also the dam of another Martaline filly, now aged 3, in training with Yannick Fouin. Two Doctor Dino colts follow.
