The filly Enable (Nathaniel) accomplished an incredible feat, retaining her crown in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr1), despite the fact that the Prince Khalid Abdullah owned filly had been held up by a knee injury for the best part of the year. She was only able to make her comeback a month ago in a Gr3 at Kempton on the all weather track. Lanfranco Dettori gave her a beautiful ride, beating Sea of Class (Sea the Stars) a shade cosily at the post. The latter, supplemented into the race, was still in last place turning into the home straight. She accomplished a rare feat. Cloth of Stars (Sea the Stars), who came second last year, came in a strong third this time, in front of his stable companion Waldgeist (Galileo), and Capri (Galileo).
Enable is now the eighth horse to have won the Arc twice. Lanfranco Dettori takes home his sixth Arc win, an unbeaten record, whereas the Prince Khaleed Abdullah joins Marcel Boussac with his sixth success.
How they ran
1st – Enable : Jumped well and travelled in fifth position with plenty of running. Made her move to the lead with ease 300m from the post, then started putting daylight between her and the pack one furlong out. Manage to hold off a very strong finish from Sea of Class to bring home her second Arc.
2nd – Sea of Class : Moved from the outside to travel in last position along the rail. Weaved through the runners at the start of te final straight, but was blocked in behind Tiberian 300m from the post. She squeezed through to make her run a furlong out but Enable had made up ground. Quickened to finish second by a nose.
3rd – Cloth of Stars : Travelled mid-division before beginning his run opposite the Pavillion Stand. He stayed on to come third.
4th – Waldgeist: Settled in his rythm at the rear of the pack. Still far back coming into the final straight but quickened and made up ground on the inside to snatch fourth place.
5th – Capri : Travelled in second after jumping keenly. Bravely stayed on to come fifth.
6th - Salouen : Travelled mid-division and made his run coming into the straight. He was bumped a furlong out but battled bravely to take sixth place.
7th – Kew Gardens : Travelled at the rear and came with a run to finish seventh, no extra.
8th – Nelson : Played his role of pacemaker for Kew Gardens and Capri. Kept the lead up to the Pavillion Stand then weakened.
9th – Study of Man : Travelled in the middle of the pack in the wake of Hunting Horn. Found a gap and weaved through 450 meters from the post, a good effort maintained until the final furlong the flattened.
10th – Magical : Settled in second to last, never a threat in the straight.
11th – Way to Paris : Travelled in the rear end of the pack, never any impression.
12th – Tiberian : Broke well, travelled in 6th along the rail. Weakened two furlongs from the post.
13th – Talismanic : Travelled mid-division and stuck out wide to make his run. No extra.
14th – Patascoy : Jumped well and travelled in seventh with good cover but made his run in the false straight and flattered.
15th – Defoe : Broke well, stuck out wide with no cover before joining the pack on the rise. Made his move comng into the home straight, weakened early, no extra.
16th – Hunting Horn : travelled in eighth. Boxed in on the false straight, gave up early.
17th – Clincher : Made a good run in fourth, failed to pose a threat in the straight.
18th – Neufbosc : Travelled in the rear end of the pack and weakened early at the false straight.
19th – Louis d’Or : Travelled at the rear, never any impression.

« It’s been a nightmare year, it’s not easy when they go lame and they go off a long time as she was, but the vets did a brilliant job. She has a fantastic mind, she's a real competitor. It’s like being a football manager with someone who goes out there and gives you 100 percent and you can build a team around them, she’s one of those. She came back at Lingfield and you bounce off the surface there, it’s not exactly a normal preparation for the Arc. You’re not meant to come into the Arc off one run on the all weather. “It was a good run from Capri. Last time he lacked racing. In terms of his recovery, he could run again in the weeks to come. Kew Gardens ran well but would have liked more pace because he stays well. His following program is the same, he could run in England in 15 days. Both should stay in training next year. We are very happy with the performance of Hunting Horn but he lacked speed in the finish. He battled bravely until the end. Magical finished well. There are six descendants of Galileo among the first eight. It’s exceptional. Furthermore, the first 8 are from the family of Urban Sea. We never expected that. Coolmore have always based their programme around the Derby. We are doing everything to find an successor for Galileo. We have great hopes about Camelot continuing Montjeu’s line, which has always had great success at the Arc.”

La pouliche Enable (Nathaniel) a réussi l’exploit de conserver son titre dans le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr1). Et pourtant, la représentante du prince Khalid Abdullah a été sur la touche une bonne partie de l’année, victime d’un problème au genou. Elle n’a pu faire sa rentrée qu’il y a moins d’un mois, dans un Gr3 disputé sur la P.S.F. de Kempton. Lanfranco Dettori lui a donné un parcours en or, et elle a pu garder un minime avantage sur la 3ans Sea of Class (Sea the Stars) au passage du poteau. Cette dernière, supplémentée pour participer à la course, était encore dernière à l’entrée de la ligne droite. Elle réalise une performance peu commune. Cloth of Stars (Sea the Stars), deuxième l’an dernier mais qui avait du mal à retrouver son meilleur niveau, conclut excellent troisième, devant son compagnon d’entraînement Waldgeist (Galileo) et Capri (Galileo).
Enbale devient le huitième cheval à avoir remporté deux fois l’Arc (et la troisième femelle seulement). Lanfranco Dettori remporte quant à lui son sixième Arc de Triomphe, un record absolu, alors que le prince Khalid Abdullah rejoint Marcel Boussac avec six succès.
Comment ils ont couru
- 1re – Enable : S’est bien élancée et a galopé en cinquième position avec beaucoup de ressources. A pris aisément l’avantage à trois cents mètres du but, puis a commencé à creuser l’écart au poteau des deux cents derniers mètres. A résisté de peu à l’excellent retour de Sea of Class pour s’offrir un deuxième Arc.
- 2e – Sea of Class : A galopé en dernière position le long de la corde. S’est rapprochée à l’entrée de la ligne droite avec aisance, mais s’est retrouvée derrière Tiberian sur ses fins à trois cents mètres du poteau. A été déboitée à deux cent cinquante mètres mais Enable avait pris du champ. A terminé très vite pour échouer d’une courte encolure.
- 3e – Cloth of Stars : A évolué au centre du peloton avant de prononcer son effort en pleine piste à hauteur du Pavillon. A bien prolongé cet effort pour se classer troisième.
- 4e – Waldgeist : Est parti à son rythme et a galopé parmi les derniers. Était encore loin à l’entrée de la ligne droite, mais n’a fait que regagner du terrain, plutôt côté corde, pour venir arracher la quatrième place.
- 5e – Capri : A galopé en deuxième position et a été l’un des premiers à lancer le sprint. A été très courageux jusqu’au bout pour conclure cinquième.
- 6e – Salouen : A évolué au cœur du peloton et a lancé l’emballage final dès l’entrée de la ligne droite. N’a pas eu toutes ses aises un instant à deux cents mètres du but, mais a été tenace pour accrocher la sixième place.
- 7e – Kew Gardens : A galopé parmi les derniers et s’est montré courageux dans les deux cents derniers mètres pour se classer septième.
- 8e – Nelson : A joué son rôle de leader pour Kew Gardens et Capri. A mené et était encore devant au Pavillon avant de s’éteindre.
- 9e – Study of Man : A galopé au centre du peloton caché dans le dos de Hunting Horn. A eu le jour à quatre cents cinquante mètres du but, prononçant un bel effort, qu’il a prolongé jusqu’à deux cents mètres du poteau, avant de rester dans son action.
- 10e – Magical : A évolué en avant-dernière position et n’a pu se montrer dangereuse dans la ligne droite.
- 11e – Way to Paris : A galopé dans la seconde moitié du peloton, mais n’a pu se rapprocher dans la phase finale.
- 12e – Tiberian : Bien parti, il a galopé en sixième position le long de la corde. Mais a rétrogradé à partir du poteau des quatre cents derniers mètres.
- 13e – Talismanic : A galopé au centre du peloton et s’est annoncé en dehors à l’entrée de la ligne droite, mais n’a pu participer à l’emballage final.
- 14e – Patascoy : S’est bien élancé et a galopé en septième position, bien caché, mais était déjà monté dans la fausse ligne droite et a plafonné à la fin.
- 15e – Defoe : Est bien parti et est resté isolé complètement en dehors avant de rejoindre le peloton dans la montée. Sollicité à l’entrée de la ligne droite, a plafonné rapidement.
- 16e – Hunting Horn : A galopé en huitième position en épaisseur. Cadencé aux bras dans la fausse ligne droite, a rendu les armes rapidement.
- 17e – Clincher : A eu un bon parcours en quatrième position, mais a cédé dès l’entrée de la ligne droite.
- 18e – Neufbosc : A évolué dans la seconde moitié et a lâché prise dès la fausse ligne droite.
- 19e – Louis d’Or : A galopé parmi les derniers, mais n’a pu se rapprocher dans la ligne droite.

« Elle a eu un contretemps entre Kempton et l’Arc, de la température. Frankie a dit qu’elle n’était pas à son mieux mais elle a fait le travail. Il l’a bien montée. Cela a été un test de tenue. Ils ont accéléré pendant toute la course et les derniers 100m ont montré qu’elle n’était pas vraiment à 100 %. Vous n’êtes pas censés gagner l’Arc avec une seule course sur la P.S.F. dans les jambes. C’est contre les règles. Mais elle a la classe pour le faire, simplement. Bravo à son propriétaire et éleveur. C’est phénoménal de faire cela avec une préparation contrariée, avec blessure à la jambe et contretemps. J’avais encore quelques cheveux sur la tête au début de l’année mais je les ai perdus au fur et à mesure ! Elle est très forte. »

« On ne peut rien d’autre à part que c’est Enable qui a gagné, pas nous ! Elle est battue par une championne. Le numéro à la corde ne nous a pas aidés, mais la pouliche de John Gosden est phénoménale. James Doyle l’a montée à la perfection. Ce n'était pas écrit qu'il finirait devant Waldgeist, mais il a mis ses mauvaises performances derrière lui et il a confirmé sa deuxième place de l'année dernière. Il était vraiment magnifique aujourd'hui et il était au top. Il a fait tout ce qu'on lui a demandé et il a placé une superbe accélération. Quant à Talismanic, il n'avait pas les ressources nécessaires pour aller avec les autres aujourd'hui. »

« La performance est très bonne. Le cheval a été amené dans de superbes conditions. Je le connais depuis qu’il a 2ans, et je l’ai très souvent travaillé le matin. Un jour ou l'autre, il va rentrer au haras, mais nous devons encore réfléchir aux différentes options. »

« Capri court très bien. La dernière fois il manquait de compétition. En fonction de sa récupération, il pourrait recourir dans les semaines à venir. Kew Gardens court bien mais il aurait aimé plus de rythme car il tient très bien. Lui aussi, en fonction de sa récupération, pourrait courir dans 15 jours en Angleterre. On peut penser que les deux vont rester à l'entraînement l'année prochaine. Nous sommes très contents de la performance d'Hunting Horn mais il manqué d'un peu de vitesse pour finir. Il s'est battu jusqu'au bout. Magical finit bien. Il y a six descendants de Galileo dans les huit premiers. C'est exceptionnel. Et les huit premiers portent le sang d'Urban Sea. On a jamais vu cela. Coolmore a toujours fait le choix de la sélection par le Derby et pour les grandes courses c'est important. Nous faisons tout pour trouver un successeur à Galileo. Nous avons de grands espoirs en Camelot pour perpétuer la lignée de Montjeu, laquelle a toujours bien réussit dans l'Arc. »
