The Malleret (Gr2) is a race for 3-year-old fillies over 1m4f usually run at the end of July. It was designed to reveal eventual candidates for the Vermeille (Gr1), contested this year on September 13 and now also open to aged mares.
Given the upheavals in the French calendar this year, it finds itself alongside the Lys (Gr3), which plays the same role for the colts en route for the Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris (Gr1).
The last Malleret-Vermeille goes back to 2002 when Pearly Shells was in her prime. In recent years, some have made the frame in the "Vermeille" after winning the "Malleret", such as Royal Highness in 2005, Testosterone in 2011, Dolniya in 2014 and Sea Calisi in 2015.
Five fillies have come together this time, none of them was in the Diane Longines, run this year only nine days earlier, and only one of the nine runners in the Royaumont (Gr3), also run over 1m1/2, but at Chantilly on June 10…

  • 1. BONNE IDÉE (f3, GB by Frankel and Mirror Lake, by Dubai Destination) Rating: 98lbs

Trained in Chantilly, bred by her owner, she started her career last year with a 4th place, then won very pleasantly for her return, this year at Lyon-Parilly over 1m2f. She won again but not that easily over 1m 2 1/2f in a Class 1 race at Chantilly and it will be interesting to see her over a longer trip.

  • 2. VAUCELLES (f3, FRA by Le Havre and Vaunoise, by Teofilo) Rating: 103lbs

Trained in Chantilly, bred by her owner, a good winner for her debut at the end of May in Deauville over 1m2f, beating a filly who has disappointed since. She, on the other hand, finished fourth immediately after in the Saxon Warrior Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary (Gr1), seemingly running green. She too will be well followed for her first attempt on the classic distance.

  • 3. MOZZARELLA (f3, FRA by Power and Melting Ice, by Verglas) Rating: 100lbs

Trained in Chantilly, she finished fourth in the Caravelle - Haras de Granges (L), beating Neig Blanche, who went on to win the Cleopatre (Gr3) at Lyon/ Then she ran on strongly in the Royaumont (Gr3) over the same distance. Previously, Mozzarella had won two consecutive handicaps and her rating went north by 7kgs, that is 15lbs, this happening after she was claimed for € 22,888 and € 28,888!

  • 4. ORIENTAL MYSTIQUE (f3, GB by Kingman and Madame Chiang, by Archipenko) Rating: 88lbs

Trained in England, bred by her owner, she started last October with a fourth place, close to three lengths behind Trefoil, whom she faces again here, and won afterwards over Kempton's all-weather. For her seasonal return, she was well beaten in a Newmarket Listed race over 1m2f. Her dam is a Group 1 winner at Ascot over this 1m4f trip.

  • 5. TREFOIL (f3, GB by Teofilo and Prairie Flower, by Zieten) Rating: 101lbs

Trained in England, bred by her owner, she won for her debut and her only race at 2, over one mile in Newmarket. Third on June 7 for her return over 1m2f, again in Newmarket, she was well beaten then in the Ribblesdale Stakes (Gr2) over this distance.
