The 2020 edition

Sunday, August 2, 2020, Deauville. - Two weeks after the Darley Prix Robert Papin (Gr2) and three weeks before the Darley Prix Morny (Gr1), the Darley Prix de Cabourg (Gr2) is the second stage of the Darley series.

Earthlight’s successor in the 2-year-old 6-furlong race is the British raider Cairn Gorm (Bated Breath), who remains unbeaten in three outings. The representative of Hunscote Stud & Partner travelled in 6th position and finally had the last word in the last word after following the favourite, his compatriot Mighty Gurkha (Sepoy), returned to the fore at full speed after missing his start (he was still blinded when the stalls opened), and who gave in the end.

Quickly in the lead alongside Lagoken (Goken), Prince Lancelot (Sir Prancealot) remained third a head behind an excellent Jubilation (Acclamation), always well placed behind the leading group and second at a length.

Trained in England by Mick Channon, bought back £ 35,000 at the Goffs yearling sales, Cairn Gorm had won his first two outings and had been very brave to keep the lead until the end, previously over the same distance at Newbury.

His dam is a sister to a Musidora Stakes (Gr3) winner and her third dam is the champion mare Time Charter, winner of the Oaks, King George, Coronation Cup and Champion Stakes …

History

This race was created in 1921 by the Société d’Encouragement which, earlier that year, had absorbed the Société des Courses de Deauville following the death of its chairman, Comte Jacques Le Marois. One of the trials on route to the Prix Morny, it was not run from 1940 to 1945 when the racecourse was closed during the Second World War, but it has always been held at the Norman racetrack. However, its distance has undergone several changes. Fixed at 6 furlongs from 1921 to 1954, it subsequently became 4 ½ furlongs in 1955, 5 furlongs in 1956 and 1957, 6 furlongs from 1958 to 1960, 5 furlongs from 1961 to 1964, 7 furlongs from 1965 to 1970, 6 ½ furlongs in 1972, and then 6 furlongs since 1972. The Prix de Cabourg was elevated to Group 3 status in 1988.

It was fifty-six years before a winner of the Prix de Cabourg followed up their victory by clinching the Prix Morny. This "first" was achieved by Super Concorde (1977), who has since been emulated by 6 other horses: Sakura Reiko (1986), First Waltz (1987), Hector Protector (1990), Coup de Génie (1993), Dabirsim (2011) and Earthlight (2019).

The Prix de Cabourg honours list features the names of excellent performers like Take My Tip (1925, Grand Prix de Paris), Le Bécau (1931, Poule d’Essai), Ping Pong (1934, Grand Prix de Deauville), Turmoil (1947, Grand Prix de Deauville), Elu (1951, Prix Ganay), Fort de France (1952, Prix Hocquart), Soyeux (1967, Grand Prix de Deauville), Dankaro (1973, Prix Lupin), Kendor (1988, Poule d’Essai), Xaar (1997, Dewhurst Stakes), Denebola (2003, Prix Marcel Boussac) & Ervedya (2014, Diane).
