The 2020 edition

Sunday, November 8, 2020, Auteuil. - The odds-on favourite of the €135,000 Haras d'Étreham Bournosienne 3yo Fillies Hurdle race (Gr2), the fillies version of the Cambacérès 3yo Hurdle race (Gr1), Hôtesse du Chenêt (Martaline) won a third consecutive race without much hassle, even if she was bumped on before the race in front of the exercise hurdle race. Wearing a hood for the first time, the Magalen Bryant-owned grey filly followed the leader Fortunes Melody (Yorgunnabelucky) until the last turn. She then accelerated to take over and clinched a confident lead to score easily by 3.5 lengths. Fortunes Melody stayed on in second place. For her debut at this level of competition after two wins, Starlet du Mesnil (No Risk at All) tried to launch her challenge early in the last straight at the centre of the course but she had to oblige, finishing third at 13 lengths.

Obeone (Muhtathir) and Haie d'Honneur (Fame and Glory) had been withdrawn while Elite Rock (Masked Marvel) fell once again at the last, just like in her debut race recently.

It was a fourth success in the race for owner Magalen Bryant, whose colours had already scored in this event with Viviane Royale (2012), Whetstone (2017), Want of a Nail (2019). Hotesse du Chenêt's trainer Marcel Rolland, for his part, celebrated his third victory after those of Bulougun (2002) and Viviane Royale (2012).

Hôtesse du Chenet is out of the good Tanaïs du Chenet (Poliglote), a Cambacérès 3yo Hurdle race (Gr1) winner at Auteuil in 2010. At stud, after a career which allowed her to earn nearly € 560,000 in prizemoney, she also gave Gary du Chenet (Martaline), winner of the Gelas Handicap Chase at Auteuil, more recently the 2yo Ibiza du Chenet (Manduro) and a colt by Doctor Dino born in 2019.

History

This fledging race (created in 2001) offers fillies an alternative to facing their male counterparts in the following day’s Prix Cambacérès, the main hurdles event for 3 year-olds.

Karly Flight (2001), Psychée du Berlais (2003), King’s Daughter (2004), Ombre d’Estruval (2005), Nikoline (2009) and Whetstone (2017) started there an amazing career.

The race honours the memory of a mare who, more through fortune than fearlessness, triumphed in 1982’s Prix Cambacérès. It was promoted to Group 2 in 2019, the year Haras d’Étreham started to sponsor the race as the final leg of a program for 3-year-old fillies over hurdles comprising the Iena (L), Sagan (Gr3), Chambly (Gr3) & Magne (Gr3) Hurdle race in the Spring and the Autumn at Auteuil. After every race, the famous Normand stud farm, which has invested in jumping breeding and bloodlines, on top of boosting the prizemoney, offers a free nomination of one of their sires to the winning breeders.

Bournosienne

This bay brown horse sired by Star and foaled by Belle Marguerite (Badaboum) in 1979 was bred by Amédée Barus. She ran in the colours of her trainer Guy Lauret, who set up base at La Teste after a decent career as a jockey in the South-West, where he served his apprenticeship under Renaud de Tauzia.

Bournosienne possessed a modicum of quality on the flat, as shown by her brace of wins as a 2-year-old at Mont-de-Marsan and two further successes the following summer at 3, one of which came at Pompadour, the other at La Teste. But the following March, she embarked on a career as a hurdler and was placed three times in five outings before winning the Prix Georges Pelat at Auteuil in September. During her next sortie in the Prix Georges de Talhouët-Roy, she had to content herself with third place behind Imyar. Undeterred, Guy Lauret lined her up at the start of the Prix Cambacérès, for which Imyar was the hot favourite. When the latter had an off-day, Bournosienne was very fortunate to be able to take advantage and claim victory after her jockey Daniel Bazerque narrowly avoided falling at the final hurdle. Bournosienne’s 30/1 win was also aided by the heavy going, which favoured the filly whose trainer was able to declare: "this has been the greatest day of my life". Bournosienne went to post twenty-one more times on the flat and over the jumps as a 4 and 5-year-old, but could only glean five modest places in the South-Western region.
