Saturday, leading 4yo champions De Bon Coeur and Edward d'Argent remained unbeaten at Auteuil, while Perfect Impulse won the Prix Ingré Chase, thus putting herself in the Grand Steeplechase de Paris picture for good ...

Saturday, April 29, Auteuil Racecourse (Paris). - The day's favorites showed up on time as the major championship of the season at Auteuil loom closer. Four Group races were scheduled, including the final stage on the road to the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris (Gr1 - 21 May), the Prix Ingré Chase (Gr3), and two 4-year championships, the Prix Amadou Hurdle (Gr2) And the Prix Jean Stern Chase (Gr2).
In the absence of So French and Storm of Saintly (Saint des Saints), non runner due to an inflammation on Saturday morning, the succession of As d'Estruval in the Prix Ingré Chase was wide open but once again, 5yo mare Perfect Impulse (Poliglote) stole the show, just like in the Prix Troytown Chase (Gr3), almost a month and a half ago in similar circumstances. The winner, trained by Arnaud Chaillé-Chaillé at Les Mathes near Royan, is owned by Richard Corveller and she was bred in Normandy by Olivier Tricot. Also winner of the Prix Morgex Chase (Gr3) last year, Perfect Impulse is a daughter of Aubane (Cadoudal), twice a Listed-racewinner over hurdles at Auteuil and the dam of six different winners having earned more than €700,000 combined ...
De Bon Coeur (Vision d'État) was once again magnificent over the Prix Amadou hurdles, the penultimate stage before the 4yo Champion Hurdle, the Prix Alain du Breil (Gr1-11 June). The Prix Questarabad Hurdle (Gr3), on the eve of the Grand Steeple, will be the final preparatory stage, but it is not clear whether the Jacques Détré homebred filly will make it there. She could be aimed directly at the big one by trainer François Nicolle. De Bon Coeur is out of Santa Bamba (Saint des Saints), winner of the Prix Jean Stern Chase in 2007, her last race, under Jacques Détré's silks. The owner also raced the champion's dad, French Derby winner VIsion d'Etat, whom he bred, and Santa Bamba's sire Saint des Saints. The resulting filly is pretty much his masterpiece.
Edward d'Argent (Martaline) won the Prix Jean Stern 4yo Chase on saturday for British owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede. The grey gelding is now unbeaten in six chases, but he had to work a bit on Saturday to keep Srelighonn (Martaline) at a length. Indeed, his trip wasn't spotless and Guillaume Macaire will probably have a bit of tuning to do in the three weeks until the Prix Ferdinand Dufaure 4yo Chase (Gr1-21 May). The outstanding French stallion Martaline (Linamix) sired the exacta here.
The Grande Course de Haies de Printemps (Gr3), which is to hurdlers what the Prix du President de la Republique Chase (French National-Gr3) is to the chasers, that is to say the richest handicap of the season (€155,000), was cancelled about 1,000m away from the finish line as jockey Alejandro Ruiz Gonzalez, who had fallen one lap before, was still lying on the track in what was to be the last turn (conscious but injured, he was evacuated afterwards, reassuring news came later in the day). The runners were in the opposite flight of hurdles and the course, already altered with the rail pushed wide to save the inside ground, was not wide enough to bypass the unfortunate jockey. The event is rescheduled on Friday (riders declared on Wednesday at 10:30 am) with all the runners confirmed for last Saturday eligible to run again.
The Prix Wild Monarch 3yo Hurdle (L) became a consolation prize for Storm of Saintly's owner Jeannot Andt, as the breeder-owner saw his colors win courtesy of Calotin (Martaline). Trained by Guillaume Macaire, he dominated Equemauville (Saint of the Saints) and Envole Toi (Enrique) after the last hurdle in this prestigious beginners' event. Calotin is out of Cardamine (Garde Royale), who was also trained by Guillaume Macaire. She left the competition a maiden but the trainer had deemed her talented enough to start at Auteuil in the Prix Auricula Hurdle, where she finished fourth to Ladykish, a champion in the making back then. Moreover, Cardamine has done well at stud since she has given five winners, including the good Corscia (Nickname). She foald a full brother to Calotin last year. His name is Carnavalet.
