Focus on the maiden winners of the past week on the France Galop racecourses, an opportunity to discover some of tomorrow's champions ...

TANTHEEM (F2), GB by Teofilo ex Riqa (Dubawi)
Prix de la Source (Maiden, 2yo Fillies, 1,300m Fibresand), July 5, Deauville

Owner : Hamdan Al Maktoum
Trainer : Freddy Head
Breeder : Shadwell Estate Co Ltd
Rider : Aurélien Lemaître

Tantheem outclassed them all here, leaving Marvelous Night (Captain Marvelous), who had followed her from the start, four and a half lengths behind her in 2nd, with Shesgotthelot (Finjaan) satying on for 3rd after trying his luck going into the straight. Freddy Head-trained filly was an eyecatching second for her debut after a missed start. She had not been able to threaten High Dream Milena (Dabirsim) that day but that debut race was full of promises, which she kept handily here on the fibresand.

Tantheem's 5th dam is the great matron Allegretta, dam of Urban Sea, who gave Galileo and Sea the Stars, and of King's Best. Tantheem's connections to her go back to Allez Les Trois (Riverman), a sister of the French Derby winner Anabaa Blue and a winner of the Prix de Flore (Gr3) with jockey Freddy Head up. The same trained her dam Riqa (Dubawi), Listed-placed and winner a at 2 and 3. Outstanding pedigree and great ability.

ZANZI WIN (G2), FRA by Zanzibari ex Go To Win (Coroner)
Prix du Bois Hue (Maiden, 2yoC&G, 1,300m Fibresand), July 5, Deauville

Owner : Écurie Étoile NV
Trainer : Jean-Philippe Dubois
Breeder : Haras de Grandcamp EARL
Rider : Gérald Mossé

A much more confusing race here than the fillies' one won by Tantheem and a time one second worse. Zanzi Win, who had been hampered before the turn when Gérald Mossé had to slow him down rather sharply, won the final struggle by a short head over Belgrano (Tin Horse) and Uther Pendragon (Dragon Pulse) involved in an early dogfight that lasted the whole straight.

Zanzi Win had just started his career with a third place behind Contortionist in Chantilly, the same day Tantheem finished 2nd for her debut, and he already finished well that time.

Bred by the Haras de Grandcamp (Eric Lhermite), Zanzi Win is the 4th foal out of winning mare Go To Win, and the second to win. His elders Go Milady (Evasive) and Win On Sunday (Never on Sunday), aged 4 and 3, have run 37 and 26 times to date and each have won more than €72,000.

Their dam is a sister to the good Gat (Nombre Premier), a winner of the Prix Frédéric de Lagrange (L), Vichy's Derby.

ARTISANNE (F3), IRE by Mastercraftsman ex Turkana Girl (Hernando)
Prix du Cochet (Unraced 3yo, 1,900m Fibresand), July 5, Deauville

Owner : Gerard Thomas Ryan
Trainer : Marcus & Stéphanie Nigge
Breeder : Dennis McDonnell
Rider : Théo Bachelot

For her debut in a 13-strong field of unraced 3yos, Artisanne was safely kept alongside the pack and her rider had to push her from the last turn on so that she could grab inch after inch and finally catch Markovo (New Approach) on the post.

Bred in Ireland, Artisanne was bought €28,000 as a yearling at Goffs' Orby sales, a modest price for the sister of a winner of the Prix Robert Papin (Gr2), Irish Field (Dubawi).

KEN COLT (G2), (IRE) by Kendargent ex Velvet Revolver (Mujahid)
Prix Machiavellian (Unraced 2yo, 1,000m Turf), July 7, Deauville

Owners : Roy Racing Ltd, Fabrice Chappet, Christopher Wright, Crispin de Moubray
Trainer : Fabrice Chappet
Breeder : Stratford Place Stud
Rider : Ioritz Mendizabal

Ken Colt proved to be a tough yet green little gelding as he just held off Evertogether (Kodiac), who had trailed him all the way.

Bred in Ireland, Ken Colt was consigned by Haras d'Omméel at the 2016 Arqana August Sale but he did not find a buyer at €20,000. He's now owned in majority (40%) by British company Roy Racing Ltd, whose black and white silks are also successfully worn by Siyoushake (Siyouni). Roy Racing also races Ken Colt's brother, the fast Shot in the Dark (Dark Angel), also in partnership with Christopher Wright. Ken Colt's dam, Velvet Revolver, won six races in Italy and finished fourth in the Prix du Cercle (L) in the summer of 2006 at Deauville for Christopher Wright.

CASCADIAN (C2), GB by New Approach ex Falls of Nora (Street Cry)
Prix de Thimecourt (Unraced 2yo C&G, 1,400m Turf), July 9, Chantilly

Owner : Godolphin SNC
Trainer : André Fabre
Breeder : Godolphin
Rider : Mickaël Barzalona

Cascadian didn't start well and was second last as they were entering the only, long turn to the straight. He was still ninth as they were leaving the bend. However, even though he had to switch and turn a few times to find his way, Mickaël Barzalona didn't rush him and as soon as he found his gait, about 300 yards away, the race was over. He extended his lead effortlessly to four and a half lengths.

Cascadian is the first foal out of Falls of Lora, winner in England at 2, then fifth in the Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr1) won by Elusive Kate. She was to win at Group 3 level in Meydan -the UAE Oaks-, then a Listed in Sandown, all for trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni. She is out of Firth of Lorne (Danehill), who finished second in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000-Gr1) in 2002 behind Zenda before giving birth to Latharnach (Iffraaj), second in the St James's Palace Stakes (Gr1) won by Gleneagles in 2015. He however was castrated last Autumn despite a Listed win in England.

SULLY (F2-PHOTO), FRA by Siyouni ex Shaama Rose (Verglas)
Prix Cheval CSO (Unraced 2yo Fillies, 1,400m Turf), July 9, Chantilly

Owners : Gérard Augustin-Normand et Alain Jathière
Trainer : Rodolphe Collet
Breeder : Laurent Kling et Alain Dambrines
Rider : Cristian Demuro

Cristian Demuro gave the debutante Sully every chance by keeping her in the pocket behind the leaders and the filly responded very professionnally, never giving up in the last 2 furlongs to resist a resolute Heads Together (Kodiac), who hekd on as much as he could but simply couldn't keep up with the grey filly in the last stages.

Sully's pedigree was published three times in sales books : as a weanling at the Arqana Breeding Sale, where Marc-Antoine Berghgracht (MAB Agency) bought her from consignor Haras d'Haspel for €37,000 €, then as a yearling last October with Arqana when consigned by Haras de Tourgéville, and not sold at €35,000. She was also listed for the Osarus breeze-up sale last April but never made it to La Teste since her actual owners had bought her privately before.

Maiden mare Shaama Rose, her dam, was sold €7,000 at the 2010 Arqana breeding sale to Laurent Kling (Ecurie du Klau), co-breeder of Sully.

Sully's elder sister, Shamadiva (Rajsaman), races in Martinique and Guadeloupe, in the French Caribbean, and she won over there twice last summer.
