BAKOEL KOFFIE (C3), (IRE) by Naaqoos ex Diamond Square (Dyhim Diamond)
Prix de Coupesarte (Maiden, 3yoC&G, 1,300m PSF), August 8, Deauville

Owner : Berend van Dalfsen
Triner : Fabrice Chappet
Breeder : Berend van Dalfsen
Rider : Tony Piccone

Bakoel Koffie led all the way, took off entering the last straight and was never threatened after that, leaving his best rival Shams Brazilero (Shamardal) a length behind. It was a third attempt by this brother to the good sprinter Finsbury Square (Siyouni). He started in February at Chantilly  and was fourth five months later on soft ground. After Bakoel Koffie (name of an Indonesian coffeeshop), Diamond Square gave a 2yo filly by Excelebration also trained by Fabrice Chappet, and a full sister to Finsbury Square born in 2016.

OLMEDO (C2-Head picture), FRA by Declaration of War ex Super Pie (Pivotal)
Prix de Crèvecoeur (Unraced 2yo C&G, 1,500m Turf), August 8, Deauville

Owner : Écurie Antonio Caro et Gérard Augustin-Normand
Trainer : Jean-Claude Rouget
Breeder : Dream With Me Stable Inc
Rider : Cristian Demuro

Huge impression left by Olmedo in that 16-beginners race, one of the most souught after in the Lucien Barriere meeting. Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget for the same connections than those of Almanzor earlier last season, the colt destroyed the field and scored by four lengths without breaking sweat.

Olmedo was purchased €100,000 by his trainer at Arqana Auguste 2016 sales, when consigned by Haras des Capucines for breeder Dream With Me Stable. his one of the first foals by freshman sire Declaration of War (War Front), who started his career with Rouget by winning twice for breeder Joe Allen, joined Coolmore and trainer Aidan O’Brien afterwards. A winner of the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr1) and the International Stakes (Gr1), he finished 3rd in the Breeders'Cup Classic (Gr1) before entering stud at Ashford in Kentucky.

Super Pie, Olmedo's dam, was bred by Jean-Pierre Duboisand won at Deauville for Dream With Me Stable. She's out of the excellent Super Lina (Linamix), who won the Prix Pénélope (Gr3) for Dubois  and trainer Yves de Nicolaÿ.

EFAADAH (F2), IRE by Dansili ex Albaraah (Oasis Dream)
Prix des Marettes (Unraced 2yo Fillies, 1,500m Turf), August 8, Deauville

Owner : Hamdan Al Maktoum
Trainer : Freddy Head
Breeder : Shadwell Stud Co. Ltd
Rider : Aurélien Lemaître

15 runners here in the feminine version of Olmedo's race, also very popular with French main trainers, and another clear dominance by Efaadah, as 2nd-placed Soustraction (Lope de Vega) finished three lengths behind an eased winner.

The Shadwell homebred is very influenced by Juddmonte since both her sire and her damsire come from there. The filly's a sister to Alrahma (Shamardal), also trained by Freddy Head for the same connections and a winner of the Prix de Cabourg (Gr3) at Deauville before her last race, a 2nd place in Lady Aurelia's Prix Morny (Gr1).

Main entries : Fillies’ Mile (Gr1)

WILD BUD (F3), USA by Dubawi ex Wild Wind (Danehill Dancer)
Prix de Coudray (Maiden, 3yo Fillies, 1,300m PSF), August 8, Deauville

Owner : Godolphin SNC
Trainer : Henri-Alex Pantall
Breeder : Three Chimneys Farm
Rider : Mickaël Barzalona

2nd in a Maisons-Laffitte maiden over 6 furlongs, and in a Class 2 race at Vichy (behind Facilitate, who won a Class 1 at Deauville since), Wild Bud has finally braoken her maiden for her first try over sand over 1,300m, leading most of the way.

Wild Bud was sold 580,000 Guineas as a yearling at Tattersalls October 2015, at Newmarket. Her 4th dam is the great Miesque, her 3rd dam being Monevassia, who gave champion 2yo filly Rumpletiltskin. Wild Bud's dam Wild Wind, born in Germany but bred by Écurie des Monceaux, was 3rd in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas, Gr1) behind Golden Lilac for trainer Aidan O’Brien. John Magnier, Coolmore's supremo, had bought her €260,000 at Arqana Yealrings sales, and sold her in 2012 for €1,175,000, also at Arqana, to Three Chimneys. The mare was in foal to Galileo but there are no further trace of that foal.

VAL DE MARNE (F3), GB by Invincible Spirit ex Vallericca (Dynaformer)
Prix de Courbepine (Maiden, 3yo Fillies, 1,900m PSF), August 10, Deauville

Owner : Godolphin SNC
Trainer : André Fabre
Breeder : Darley Stud Management
Rider : Mickaël Barzalona

Val de Marne needed 4 races to break her maiden but that was pretty impressive anyway, since she won by 5 lentghs on the bit, for her first try over fibersand. Before that, she'd shown some improvement at Chateaubriant whereas she'd failed for her second attempt, at Maisons-Laffitte, although she'd started her career with a very encouraging Saint-Cloud debut on May 1st, when third very close to Ibiza, who has since won her Gr3.

Val de Marne is out of the unraced mare Vallericca, dam of unfortunate Newmarch (New Approach), dead at 3 while he was still unbeaten in three races. Vallericca is out of the German Oaks third Mandela (Acatenango), dam of a Japanese 2,00 Guineas third, and herself a sister to Manduro… Nice move from Selwood Bloodstock, who bought the unraced Valeria Victrix (Dubawi) for 14,000 Guineas, a sister to Val de Marne, last year at Tattersalls, and ends up with the sister of a very promising prospect indeed !

PURPLE KING (C3), (IRE) by Lope de Vega ex Dixie Dance (Orpen)
Prix de Heurtevent (Maiden, 3yo C&G, 1,900m PSF), August 10, Deauville

Owner : Écurie Normandy Spirit et Frédéric Sauque
Trainer : Freddy Head
Breeder : Écurie Haras du Cadran, Succession Michel Henochsberg, Mme P. Adès-Hazan
Rider : Aurélien Lemaître

A very close 3rd for his debut over Chantilly fibersand, then 4th and 3rd again at Saint-Cloud and Maisons-Laffitte, Purple King didn't race again for 2 months. He came back with blinkers on and won .

Bought €80,000 at Arqana Yealring sale in August 2015 by bloodstock agent Frédéric Sauque, now his co-owner, Purple King if the first foal out of Dixie Dance, winner of three races and sold out of training for €10,000. It is a rather nice family as Purple King's 3rd dam is a sister to Derby winner Golden Fleece. Purple King's sister by Makfi is in Arqana next Augsut sale book, consigned by Haras du Cadran.

HELLO PRINCESS (F2), FRA by Sageburg ex Victoria Princess (Muhtathir)
Prix de Falaise (Maiden, 2yo Fillies, 1,400m Turf), August 10, Deauville

Owner : Jean-Philippe Dubois et Écurie Victoria Dreams
Trainer : Louis Baudron
Breeder : Jean-Philippe Dubois
Rider : Olivier Peslier

A good beginner at Maisons-Laffitte, beaten by runaway Monargent at Nantes, once again clsing nicely in the end, Hello Princess went ahead for her first attempt at Deauville and beat Red Duma (Air Chief Marshall), 2nd for the third cosecutive time !

Hello Princess's dam, Victoria Princess, won twice over Auteuil's hurdles, and she too was bred by Jean-Philippe Dubois. She's a sister to good jumpers Wonderful Charm (Poliglote), twice a Gr2 novice chase in Britain, and Royal Charm (Cadoudal), 2nd in hte Prix Finot 3yo Hurlde won by Roméo Conti at Auteuil and also exported to Paul Nicholls' in UK.

ZYZZYVA (c2), FRA by Siyouni ex Zanatiya (Sinndar)
Prix de Tour en Bessin (Maiden, 2yo C&G, 1,400m Turf), August 10, Deauville

Owner : Paul Hancock
Trainer : Robyn Brisland
Breeder : SCPA Fertilia
Rider : Mickaël Barzalona

2nd for his debut at Windsor, Zyzzyva produced a nice turn of foot to score in Deauville on his 2nd test. He knows the own pretty well by now since he appeared 4 times on Arqana's ring already. Once inside his dam, an Aga Khan unraced mare form the same family than that of the classic winner Zalaiyka, bough back €38,000€ by haras de Précolette, then as a weanling when sold €37,000, as a yearling when sold €105,000€ to Irish agent MC Bloodstock, and finally at Arqana Breeze-ups in the Spring, where he couldn't find a bid at €210,000. Since then, he was renamed after going by the name of Zanouyi.

he's agot a Dragon Dancer yealring brother, a full brother to Zadrak, winner of 4 races so far with trainer Cédric Boutin.

MANAHA (F2), FRA by Elusive City ex My Girl Charlie (Kodiac)
Prix de la Motte Sassy (Unraced 2yo Fillies, 1,300m PSF), August 12, Deauville

Owner : Hamdan Al Maktoum
Trainer : François Rohaut
Breeder : Haras de Beauvoir
Rider : François-Xavier Bertras

Manaha did well for Paul Basquin's Haras du Saubouas already : out of a sister to the promising sire Myboycharlie, she was bought €32,000€ as a yearling at Arqana and sold again at the breeze-up sales for €320,000€ to Shadwell Stud. Now a winner, she's even more pricy with these nice debut over Deauville's sand on a foggy day. Her brother by Planteur is sold in Arqana's V2 yearling sale. A very welcome update for his connections !

FAKIR BÉRÉ (C2), FRA by Pedro the Great ex Triple Witching (Pulpit)
Prix de Val Sevry (Unraced 2yo C&G, 1,300m PSF), August 12, Deauville

Owner : Gérard Augustin-Normand
Trainer : Yann Barberot
Breeder : SNC Régnier
Rider : Cristian Demuro

Bought €20,000 by Sylvain Vidal for owner Gérard Augustin-Normand, Fakir Béré is the 2nd foal out of the maiden mare Triple Witching, a sister to Jacques Le Marois (Gr1) second Holocène (Lemon Drop Kid) by US sire Pulpit bred by Niarchos family and bought in 2012 by Emmanuel de Seroux, who sent her to Alain Régnier's Haras de la Haie Neuve. A full brother to Fakir Béré is born this year and his olderbrother Espoir Béré (Hurricane Cat) won the following week at Clairefontaine.

Fakir Béré is by frehsman sire Pedro The Great (Henrythenavigator), a Phoenix Stakes (Gr1) winner at 2.

A QUIET MAN (C2), (IRE) by Literato ex Priceless Baby (Peintre Célèbre)
Prix Irish River (Maiden, 2yoC&G, 1,200m Turf), August 20, Deauville

Owners : Antoine Gilibert, Fabrice Chappet & Benoît Chalmel
Trainer : Fabrice Chappet
Breeders : Écurie Haras du Cadran & Malcolm Parrish
Rider : Tony Piccone

A very convincing victory for A Quiet Man in this tiny 5-horses strong maiden, as Tony Piccone pushed the grey colt on his own in the middle of the straight course, holding off French Pegasus (French Fifteen), finally beaten by a length. It was A Quiet Man's second race only after his 3rd in the Prix de Tancarville won by Beau Ideal, who's entered in the Prix La Rochette (Gr3).

A Quiet Man was purchased €47,000 at the Arqana October sale in 2016 by Chantilly Bloodstock Agency (Gérard Larrieu). He was consigned by co-breeder Haras du Cadran. His dam Priceless Baby finished either 2nd or 3rd 7 times in 15 races for owner Malcolm Parrish, but she entered stud a maiden. She had been bought €100,000 as a yearling in Deauville, as she' a sister to Prix Penelope (Gr3) and Prix de Flore (Gr3) winner  Célimène (Dr Fong). A Quiet Man is her 3rd foal and her first winner.

RIVER CANNES (F2), FRA by Orpen ex Cannes To Capri (Galileo)
Prix d’Avranches (Maiden, 2yo Fillies, 1,200m Turf), August 20, Deauville

Owner : Stéphanie Castanheira
Trainer : Tony Castanheira
Breeder : Michel Pehu
Rider : Maxime Guyon

Twelve filies were starting there and a beginner, River Cannes, proved the most resolute to score by a head over a more seasoned Arabica (Style Vendôme), whom Christophe Soumillon rode accordingly.

River Cannes was pushed out by Maxime Guyon about two furlongs out and she never surrendered.

Consigned as a  yearling by Haras de Grandcamp at the Arqana October sale in 2016, River Cannes was sold €18,000€ to trainer Tony Castanheira. She's the 2nd foal out of maiden mare Cannes To Capri, who ran for her breeder Skymarc Farm. She had been sold in foal to Rajsaman (the resuting colt failed twice to win to date) for €32,000, and gave a yearling by Footstepsinthesand since then.

LUMINATE (F2), IRE by Lawman ex Kalandara (Rainbow Quest)
Prix de la Reboursière (Unraced 2yo Fillies, 1,600m Turf), August 22, Deauville

Owner : Highclere Thoroughbred Racing
Trainer : Freddy Head
Breeder : Philip F. & Jane Myerscough
Rider : Aurélien Lemaître

Only a head to split the two favourites in this unraced 2yo fillies race but a pretty safe Luminate beating No Faith (Le Havre), who had throwned the gauntlet early enough, sneaking in the inside as they were fanning entering the straight. Luminate immediately picked up the challenge and joined her rival to beat her in the dying strides of a very hot contest.
A good purchase for John & Jake Warren, of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing. They signed for 320,000 Guineas at Tattersalls to get Luminate's eleder brother, Paradise Lake (Siyouni), still a maiden after 4 races, at sir Michael Stoute's, and then this Lawman filly for "only" €85,000€ the following year at Goffs Ireland. The yearling sister by Lope de Vega is entered at Tattersalls in October.
Kalandara, their dam, was only placed, but shee's a sister to champion racer Kalanisi (Doyoun), winner ofthe  Champion Stakes (Gr1) and the Breeders’Cup Turf (Gr1) for breeder Aga Khan, and 2nd in a memorable renewal of the International Stakes (Gr1) against the mighty Giant’s Causeway.

WOOTTON (C2), FRA by Wootoon Bassett ex American Nizzy (American Post)
Prix de Montaigu (Unraced 2yo C&G, 1,600m Turf), August 22, Deauville

Owner : Écurie Haras de Quietteville
Trainer : Henri-Alex Pantall
Breeder : Écurie Haras de Quietteville
Rider : Mickaël Barzalona

No less than 6 lengths were counted between Wootton and his 11 opponents but the most impressive was the way he accumulated such ah advance : the green colt veered twice, on the left and then on his right, while bulding up that eye opening margin.

Wootton's dam American Nizzy also won for her debuts at Fontainebleau by three lentghs for the recently retired trainer Yves de Nicolaÿ, whose name often pops out since we study all these maiden winners's families, as if to pay the Deauville-based master trainer a special hommage after he closed his yard for the last time.

American Nizzy also race for Normandy stud farm Quietteville, and she went on to finish 2nd in Prix Roland de Chambure (L), and then 3rd in the Prix du Calvados (Gr3). Wootton is her 4th foal, and her 1st winner to date.

Her dam Quiétude (Woodman) only gave one foal after failing to win three times in France, and on many more occasions in Belgium, where she'd been exported. Quiétude had been sold out of training at 2 for €6,000 in Deauville by her breeder Skymarc Farm before starting that Belgian career.
