Our review of the 2016 leaders in France ends on with the new European champion Pierre-Charles Boudot, winner of 300 races last year...

In 2016, 24-year-old jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot set a new European record with 300 wins in France.

As soon as the year began, he gave his best shot at securing the French title and held on until the very end of the season to seize the European record, previously hel by German rider Peter Schiergen with 273 wins in 1995. In 2015 he had had to share the French "Cravache d'Or" title with his main challenger Christophe Soumillon, both jockeys winning 179 times. Boudot had finished twice third in both 2013 and 2014.

Since his first appearance in the ranks of professional riders in 2009, he has steadily climbed the ladder to reach the top. He started as an apprentice with André Fabre, and ended his first season close to the million euro mark. His rides reached netted nearly €11m in 2016, almost double the score of 2014.

Pierre-Charles Boudot has also greatly increased the number of its rides in 2016, from 1,039 races a year earlier to 1,530. As he has been riding 294 days in total last year, participating in 311 meetings, his average number of rides per day is more than five ...

The contest between Boudot and Soumillon resumed in 2017. On Wednesday evening, January 25, the two riders already counted 18 winners each, two more than in January in 2016 for Pierre-Charles Boudot alone.
