WOOTTON SAGA (F3), FRA by Wootton Basset ex Saga d’Or (Sagacity)

Twice second this Winter on the all-weather, but over a short mile, and only 19 before this behind Twelve Bros (read below on January 11), the grey Wootton Saga (Wootton Bassett) was never challenged in the end, this time, despite her 12 draw that could have been more testing in this short, round course. The homebred favourite left her best rival, the leading Racing Glory (Zebedee), over three lengths down the field! It was her first try over such a short distance, a specialty this family thrives in.
Wotton Saga's dam, Saga d’Or (Sagacity), is consigned by Haras du Saz at the February Arqana sale. She's a sister to the champion sprinter Marchand d’Or (Marchand de Sable) and has given lately a Bathyrhon colt born in 2018 and a Montmartre filly last year.

A good fourth for her debut on this track, having raced with the leading group, Hally Jem (Dawn Approach) was kept in the rear this time, just like the beginner Vivi Bonnebouille (Elusive City) and the favourite Juilley (Mastercraftsman), who eventually finished second and fourth. They chose to make their move out of the field while Marie Velon deliberately chose to try her luck in the pack. She had to check her filly a hundred and fifty yards out to finally find the gap, but Hally Jem was ready to go and she gave one last push to win by a short neck, although comfortably.
Hally Jem is a sister to Gally Jem (Acclamation), rated 90 last Autumn when placed in handicaps. The filly was unsold as a yearling in Deauville for €50,000, and then at 2 at the Arqana breeze up for €75,000, consigned by La Frênée. A Dabirsim filly was born in 2019.
This family goes back to that of Green Valley (Val de Loir), the winning filly's 5th dam, also dam of the classic Green Dancer (Nijinsky) and third dam of Solemia, Okawango and other excellent performers for the Wertheimer family.
MANDURO GOLD (C3), FRA by Manduro ex Take Grace (Take Risks)

Fifth and then ninth for her two first appearances, in October and in November over the mile, Manduro Gold (Manduro) ran for the first time on all-weather at Deauville when fourth over this same trip. She was one of last bidders this time as the Nadine Chiari-bred filly took half a length over Dexter (Canford Cliffs), who was fighting against front-runners Libre (Power) and Homesweethome (Frozen Power). Fifth, Rubeus (Alhebayeb) finished very well.
Manduro Gold is a brother to the good Phelps Win (Muhtathir), now a sire at Haras des Fontaines after winning the 2017 Prix de Guiche (Gr3). He failed to confirm as he was well beaten in the Prix Eugène Adam (Gr2), soon therafter. It was to be his last race.
Their brother Bolt Win (Intello) was bought back €49,000 at the Deauville sales last August.
TIBASTI (C3), FRA by Dabirsim ex Almahroosa (Green Tune)

Eighth for his debut in December on this same course but over 9.5 furlongs rather than 7.5 like today, Tibasti (Dabirsim) followed the front-runner Safran (Dabirsim). He made his move early in the straight line and easily took over to win almost two lengths in a time of almost two seconds better than that of the fillies of the other maiden of the day (read above). The difference was made early in the race in this larger field (eleven, for only six runners in the fillies’ race).
Safran then held off King Robbe (Zanzibari) for third.
Tibasti was bought as a yearling by Haras de Grandcamp (Éric Lhermite) for € 55,000 at the Baden-Baden sales. It was sold again in November the same year in Deauville and this time he made € 21,000, paid by Romdhane Zied. His Evasive brother made only €4,500 at the last Baden sales.
It is a nice family since if Almahroosa (Green Tune), Tibasti’s dam, did not win, she is a sister to two Listed or Group placed in France, and the third dam is Capo di Monte (Final Straw), Group winner in the USA and placed in the Sun Chariot Stakes (Gr2 at the time, Gr1 today), in Newmarket over the mile. From that mare also descends Bredders’Cup Turf (Gr1) victor Talismanic (Medaglia d´Oro).
A sister to Tibasti by Dream Ahead was bred in 2019.
TWELVE BROS (F3), IRE by Anjaal ex Hundredsnthousands (Thousand Words)

Ninth in September at ParisLongchamp over a mile, then seventh at Deauville on the all-weather over little less than a mile and quarter, Twelve Bros (Anjaal) enjoyed a good trip here over a short mile. Held back in a small field of six fillies, she took over from Deauville Dream (Requinto) who had attacked the first and then resisted Wootton Saga (Wootton Bassett), who finished well for her second outing.
Twelve Bros' dam, Hundredsnthousands (Thousand Words), was bought at 2 at Kempton's breeze-up sales, and ran only once soon aftzer, without success.
At stud, however, she also gave Spanish Fly (Iffraaj), placed in 6f Group race for trainer Maurice Delcher-Sanchez. The 5-year-old sister Omaha Beach (Epaulette) is Liestd placed for the same connections than those of Twelve Bros while a younger Spanish Miss (Lilbourne Lad), also ran and won a claimer. A 2 year old Buratino filly is to follow, now trained by Pia Brandt for Novum Stables.
OVER ATTRACTED (F3), USA by Atreides ex Appearance (Harlington)

Third for her debut in September at Fontainebleau over 6 furlongs, having raced with the leaders all the way, then 8th in Deauville a month later in a heavy ground, Over Attracted (Atreides) was bred in the USA and bought $35,000 by her now co-owner Hubert Guy at Keeneland. She was running over the all-weather for the first time here. She was also ridden by Christophe Soumillon for the first time, and was hald back in this small field of 7 runners and made her move after a wide turn going into the last straight to take a neck over Anfrati (Wootton Bassett), who had patiently waited for the right time behind the leaders, sitting by the rail.
The winner is the 2nd foal out of Appearance (Harlington), who also gave a Bayern colt sold $25,000 at Keeneland a year afater Over Attracted.
LORD ACHILLES (C3), FRA by Rio de la Plata ex Lords Lane (Sulamani)

Sixth for his debut in November on this same course and distance, Lord Achilles (Rio de la Plata) was fast out of the starting stalls and able to get an easy cover but his rider let go inside and was happy to sit outside the leading group, with Du Tonnerre (War Command) on his side. Lord Achilles slipped away going off the bend and took the lead about two out. He was challenged by Du Tonnerre but never seem to lose control and won by an easy short neck.
Lord Achilles was bought back for € 9,000 at Arqana Autumn sales by EARL Dorrells. He runs for one of his two breeders, Eric Hemming. he is the first foal out of Lords Lane (Sulamani), a winner at Chinon over 8.5f and also the dam of Coulante (Silver Frost) and Lanesend (Sommerabend).
GOODBYE DIANE (F3), FRA by Muhtathir ex Fylingdale (Layman)

La Reine Catherine (Medicean) looked like a potential winner all the way after having to take the lead at the start to avoid finding herself parked outside the field with her 12 draw, and she tried to flee early in the last straight. However, her stable mate with Stéphane Wattel, Goodbye Diane (Muhtathir), who benefited from female jockey Alison Massin's allowance, had waited for the right opportunity on a third row by the rail. It was the right thing to do as the gap opened in front of her and she was able to place her effort without going around the field to win by a head. Carribean Bay (Fulbright) finished well in third place while down the field, La Javanaise (War Command) also finished pleasantly in sixth.
It was Goodbye Diane's second race, as she'd finished sixth for her debut on the same course after having run closer to the pace.
Goodbye Diane's dam, Fylingdale (Layman), was bought back € 3,000 as a yearling in Deauville. She then won nine times for her breeder, Jedburgh Stud (Alec Waugh), competing in 69 races including one for trainer Stéphane Wattel, while she was normally conditioned by Stuart Cargeeg. In five years of career, she has accumulated nearly € 240,000 in earnings and bonuses, mainly competing in claiming races - without ever changing owners - and handicaps.
Goodbye Diane is her second foal and her first winner. She also gave a Montmartre filly that trainer Laurent Viel bought at Arqana Autumn sales for € 4,000, then a Birchwood colt. It is a German bloodline with a few speed horses.
