MUSHAYYED (C3), GB by Dubawi ex Al Ishq (Nureyev)

Prix du Hamel (Maiden 3yos, 1,500m/7.5f AWT), August 28, Deauville

Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum
Trainer: Freddy Head
Breeder: Shadwell Estate
Rider: Aurélien Lemaître

An easy win from start to finish for the favourite Mushayyed (Dubawi) for his third outingafter a third place last October at Saint-Cloud, a second race only one year later when second at Clairefontaine. This time was a first on the all-weather track.

Mushayyed is the last foal out of Al Ishq (Nureyev), an Amiens winner who nevertheless gave a Prix Jacques le Marois (Gr1) winner in Tamayuz (Nayef). She is herself a daughter of the great mare Urban Sea (Miswaki)'s sister Allez Les Trois (Riverman).

GEMMA BLU (F3), GER by Mastercraftsman ex Goiania (Oasis Dream)

Prix du Louvet (Maiden 3yos, 1,300m / 6.5f AWT), August 27, Deauville

Owners: Klaus Allofs & Gestüt Fahrhof
Trainer: Peter Schiergen
Breeder: Gestüt Fahrhof
Rider: Coralie Pacault

Gemma Blu (Mastercraftsman) needed 12 races to finally score. Sghe ran four times in her native Germany as a juvenile, and finished that first campaign down the field in a Listed event. This season, she came back over 6 furlongs at Argentan (4th), and went racing on both sides of the Rhine, doing well but not quite enough to win. A good second for her Deauville all-weather debut, she finally found her day on the same spot over this 6.5 furlongs-trip. She was brave enough to outstay the favourite Goldika (by Intello out of... Goldikova!), finally third, and couldn't be reached by a well finishing Duende (Lawman), second at a length.

Gemma Blu was sold €140,000 at the Baden-Baden yearlings sale, where her Sea the Stars brother will parade on August 30th. Her dam Goiania (Oasis Dream) won a Listed in Germany, her 2nd dam was placed in the German Oaks, and the whole catalogue page is altogether very consistently getting more black type.

TACTILE (C3), FRA by Wootton Bassett ex Zapiya (Panis)

Prix de Cricqueville (Maiden 3yos, 1,900m / 9.5f AWT), August 27, Deauville

Owner: Michael Watt
Trainer: M&S Nigge
Breeders: Benjamin Teboul & Scuderia Catalane
Rider: Mickaël Barzalona

Eighth for his debut in June, the  beaten a head at ParisLongchamp by Sosoft, Tactile (Wootton Bassett) didn't show up in July and made it at Deauville, scoring here after an obsure Clairefontaine 6th place. It was his first time over the all-weather track and on a distance longer than 8.5 furlongs.

Tactile was bought as a yearling by George Mullins, at Arqana October sale for €32,000 when consigned by Haras des Granges. He was sold again at the Arqana breeze up as Wild Land for €65,000 € by Sherbourne Lodge Stables to agent Crispin de Moubray.

His 4th dam Zanata (African Sky) was the 2nd dam of the French 1,000 Guineas winner Zalaiyka (Royal Academy). The line that eventually produced her was the one of Zanakiya (Doyoun), three times unplaced and left to South Africa where she gave two Gr1 performers. She'd previously given 4 foals in France including two eventual winners.

Zanatiya (Sinndar) never raced, however, but she foaled eight colts and fillies including Zyzzyva (Siyouni), a Prix des Chênes (Gr3) 3rd only a neck behind the Gr1 winner Olmedo. Also unraced, Zapiya (Panis) is a sister to that pleasant Zyzzyva, and after Tactile, she gave a Gémix colt now 2.

WALLY (C2), (IRE) by Siyouni ex Full of Beauty (Motivator)

Prix du Quartier Saint-François (2yo Maiden Colts & Geldings, 1,600m / 1m), August 23, Deauville

Owner: Écurie Jean-Pierre Barjon
Trainer: Jean-Claude Rouget
Breeder: Haras du Cadran, I.E.I., Lerner
Rider: Christophe Soumillon

Fourth for his debut over 7 furlongs early in July, then fifth over 1,500m, again in Deauville a month later, Wally (Siyouni) finally found his race over one mile. Held back at the start, he came by the field about 3 furlongs out, and zeroed on the front-running English raider Dyami (Bated Breath), who fought back all the way to lose by a head only. Third-placed Lionel (Toronado) ends up over three lengths back after following Dyami all the way.

Wally was bought €130,000 At 2018 Arqana yearling sales by his trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, and he's now racing for Jean-Pierre Barjon. He's the first foal out of Full of Beauty (Motivator), an Oaks d’Italia (Gr2) second trained in Germany, where she won twice. She'd been bought at the Arqana 2016 Summer sale in foal of Wally by Carlos et Yann Lerner for €60,000.

KHAYZARAAN (F2), GB by Kingman ex Riqa (Dubawi)

Prix de la Maison de l’Armateur (2yo Maiden Fillies, 1,600m / 1m), August 23, Deauville

Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum
Trainer: Freddy Head
Breeder: Shadwell Estate
Rider: Aurélien Lemaître

Held up at a decisive moment for her debut in the Arqana Prix de Lisieux, On July 28th over 6 furlongs, Khayzaraan (Kingman) was much closet to the pace this time and she came by entering the straight to score by nine lengths on the bit.

Homebred by Hamdan Al Maktoum, she's in the Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr1), run over the same distance at ParisLongchamp on Arc weekend. Her dam Riqa (Dubawi) won twice at 2 and 3, also trained by Freddy Head, and finished three times second in Listed events at 3. Riqa gave the fast Tantheem (Teofilo), a Prix de Cabourg (Gr3) winner over 6 furlongs at 2, and also a winner of the Prix de Meautry (Gr3) at 3 over 5 furlongs last year.

She's Riqa's third foal and the last recorded at France Galop.

Khayzaraan's second dam is a sister to Tamayuz (Nayef) and Naaqoos (Machiavellian), and her 4th dam is no other than Allez les Trois (Riverman), dam of classic winner Anabaa Blue (Anabaa) and a sister of the great mare Urban Sea (Miswaki).

Main entries : Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr1).

HIDAKA (F2), FRA by Deep Impact ex Royalmania (Elusive Quality)

Arqana Prix de la Reboursière (Unraced 2yo Fillies, 1,600m/1m), August 20, Deauville

Owners: Wertheimer & Frère
Trainer: André Fabre
Breeders: Wertheimer & Frère
Rider: Maxime Guyon

Soon in the leading group, Hidaka (Deep Impact) was the favourite and she didn't let her backers down as she scored by two lengths, quite comfortably, while 2nd-placed Tamahere (Wootton Bassett) ran the way Ecrivain ran the race before : she missed the start, came back in touch, made progress inside, but wasn't so free to gather momentum, and finished well all the same. La Venus Espagnola (Siyouni) stayed on in third with Pallene (Charm Spirit) finishing well at two lengths.

Hidaka is out of the dual Listed-winner Royalmania (Elusive Quality), winner of this very same newcomers' race, and once again after that, before finishing 4th in the Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr1). She ran only three times at 3, however, winning first time out in the Prix Finlande (L), but proving unable to proceed from there. She won her second Listed race at 4 at Clairefontaine.

Hidaka is her first foal.

ÉCRIVAIN (C2), FRA by Lope de Vega ex Sapphire Pendant (Danehill Dancer)

Arqana Prix de Montaigu (Unraced 2yo Colts & Geldings, 1,600m/1m), August 20, Deauville

Owners: Wertheimer & Frère
Trainer: Carlos Laffon-Parias
Breeders: Wertheimer & Frère
Rider: Maxime Guyon

Entered as early as July 18, also in the Arqana Prix de Tancarville, Écrivain (Lope de Vega) missed his start and Maxime Guyon had to ride him hard right away to keep in touch with the 12-strong field over this mile race.

Still last going into the straight, Écrivain once again needed Guyon's arms to make his way by the rail, as the road in front of him was opening nicely. Once gone, however, he was unstoppable and just pipped the three colts that were still in contention for the race to win by a head, Légende d’Art (Kingman)also beating the 3rd-placed Shoal of Time (Lope de Vega) by a head, Shining Ocean (Dabirsim) finishing 4th... a head behind!

Fifth-placed Mannix (Intello), finished like a train about half a length down.

Ecrivain is the 4th foal out of Sapphire Pendant (Danehill Dancer), and her one year elder, a filly named Starifique (Sea the Stars), also trained by Laffon-Parias, just won her maiden at Deauville in July.

Sapphire Pendant (Danehill Dancer), Starifique's dam, was paid £ 480,000 by the Wertheimers at Tattersalls Breeding sale back in 2012. She had raced for Coolmore, who'd bought her for € 300,000 at Deauville. A winner for her debut, second after that in the One Thousand Guineas Trial (Gr3) at Leopardstown, she failed three times before going off training and went for sale before she could even breed. Her price tag is down to her 2nd dam, probably, Blush With Pride (Blushing Groom), a Kentucky Oaks (Gr1) winner who is closely related to two Belmont Stakes (Gr1) winners, Rags To Riches and Jazil.

The two elder brothers of Starifique and Ecrivain are geldings, and Intello colt named Statisticien is to follow.

GOLDEN BOY (C2), FRA by Siyouni ex Straight Lass (Machiavellian)

Prix d’Exmes (Maiden 2yo Colts & Geldings, 1,200m / 6f), August 18, Deauville

Owner: Écurie Jean-Louis Bouchard
Trainer: Stéphane Wattel
Breeder: Serge Boucheron
Rider: Théo Bachelot

Third for his debut three weeks before this second attempt in the Prix de Tancarville won by Devil, a Darley Morny (Gr1) contender, Golden Boy (Siyouni) did not wait very long for his first win. Owned by Jean-Louis Bouchard, Golden Boy did not start very well and he found himself boxed behind the leading horses.

He finally was able to accelerate between horses following Matello (Intello), spotted in his last outing (when second to L'Ange de Minuit, trained like Golden Boy, by Stéphane Wattel). The race was in the bag for Golden Boy who scored by two and a half lengths and closed the last furlong in 12''66 on a yielding turf.

British raider Lin Chong (Muharaar) finished third at two lengths.

Golden Boy was bred in Maine-et-Loire by Serge Boucheron, and consigned by the Haras du Mézeray at the August 2018 Arqana sale. Purchased € 270,000 by Gérard Larrieu (Chantilly Bloodstock) for Jean-Louis Bouchard, Golden Boy is a brother to Naaqoos (Oasis Dream), winner of the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère (Gr1), and Barastraight, who won the Prix La Force (Gr3).

It is, much further, the same family than champions Pilsudski, Youmzain and Creachadoir, from the Sobell/Weinstock bloodstock.

AFICIONADO (F2), FRA by Cable Bay ex Affolante (Whywhywhy)

Prix des Étalons Shadwell (2yo maiden fillies, 1,200m / 6f), August 17, Deauville

Owner: Écurie des Mouettes
Trainer: Jean-Claude Rouget
Breeder: Jean-Pierre Dubois
Rider: Coralie Pacault

The fastest out of the gates, the favourite Aficionado (Cable Bay) made the difference two out and easily dominated with Coralie Pacaut's 3lbs allowance. Her best rival, Be Ahead (Dream Ahead), followed her from the start and finished second at two and a half lengths, more than three lengths ahead of the field.

Owned by Jean-Pierre Dubois' Écurie des Mouettes, she started with a sixth place at Maisons-Laffitte in a race won by Young Man, who disappointed since then. Ridden more aggressively after that, again over 6 furlongs, she fought all the way to the post and bravely resisted for the 2nd place. Here, she improvedf again and took only 11''2 to run the second last furlong.

Aficionado is the fourth foal out of the maiden Affolante (Whywhywhy), bred in the United States by Dream With Me Stable (Jean-Pierre Dubois, also breeder-owner of the winner). Her first foal Affoburg (Sageburg) won over 5 furlongs at 2 and chasing at Compiegne.

FLIGHTY LADY (F2), IRE by Sir Percy ex Airfield (Dansili)

Prix de Falaise (Maiden 2yo Fillies, 1,400m / 7f), August 15, Deauville

Owner: Paul Hancock
Trainer: Gavin Hernon
Breeder: Tallyho Stud
Rider: Maxime Guyon

A month after her hectic debut at ParisLongchamp, Flighty Lady (Sir Percy) confirmed the good impression she left that day. Her rider Maxime Guyon was interviewed after the race because the filly ran disorderly, and that's what he declared to the stewards. Yet she finished a good third, faster than the first two home after a messy trip.

This time, she followed the leader Minuty (Charm Spirit) and finally dominated her. Zaccapa (Muhaarar) finished well in second, coming from the rearguard.

The fourth-placed Two Thank Yous (Kodiac) was unlucky in running in the mid-stretch.

Fighty Lady was bought £ 21,000 at Tattersalls. She is out of the unraced Juddmonte Farm's Airfield (Dansili), whose brother Early March (Dansili) won the Prix La Rochette (Gr3) before finishing third in the Grand Criterium (Gr1).

WOODED (C2), (IRE) by Wootton Bassett ex Frida la Blonde (Elusive City)

Prix de Tour-en-Bessin (Maiden 2yo Colts & Geldings, 1,400m / 7f), August 13, Deauville

Owner: Al Shaqab Racing
Trainer: Francis-Henri Graffard
Breeder: Gestüt Zur Kuste AG
Rider: Pierre-Charles Boudot

Entered as soon as May, Wooded (Wootton Bassett) only started for the first time on July 22nd at Dieppe over 7 furlongs. He was only beaten by a short neck after a sluggish start and an uphill battle all along, while the winner Derbysim was able to stick to the stands' rail all the way. The latter got beaten after that in Class 2 race at Clairefontaine, but 4th-placed Excalibur was a good 3rd over 6 furlongs in another Class 2 race at Deauville, and again on the same course, class and distance on this maiden race's same card.

The form proved to be solid as Wooded, under a heavy rain, cosily took over the favourite Repel Ghosts (Dark Angel), who had led all the way and seemed pretty easy until the last furlong, only staying on to keep a hard-fought 2nd place over a tough Autumn (Outstrip), with the beginner Conargo (Dark Angel) finishing well in 4th.

Wooded was paid € 90,000 at the Arqana October sale, where Haras d’Étreham had consigned him. His dam Frida la Blonde (Elusive City) raced for her breeder Maurice Lagasse. She never won but finished 4th in a handicap with a 79lbs rating. She's a sister to the fast Mon Pote le Gitan (Thunder Gulch) & Fred Lalloupet (Elusive City), both Listed-winners on the sprint.

After Wooded, Frida la Blonde gave an Ajaya filly, and another one by Intello.

FEMINA (F2), (IRE) by Siyouni ex Légèreté (Rahy)

Prix de La Motte Sassy (Unraced 2yo fillies, 1,300m / 6.5 furlongs AWT), August 11, Deauville

Owners: Wertheimer & Frère
Trainer: Carlos Laffon-Parias
Breeders: Wertheimer & Frère
Rider: Maxime Guyon

Keen early on, Femina (Siyouni) came by the field in the turn and fought hard to the post to finally overcome her onloy rival Serkiyna (Charm Spirit) by a short neck. The two fillies left the others at 2 lengths, Pomme d’Amour (Toronado) leading the pack.

Femina is out of Légèreté (Rahy), a Prix de Malleret (Gr2) and Prix de Royaumont (Gr3) winner, also 3rd in the Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr1) at 2. She's the dam of the good extended miler Pilote (Pivotal), consistent in Group company. A Camelot filly was born in 2018.

MANDAAR (C3), FRA by Canyon Creek ex Madeleine’s Blush (Rahy)

Prix de Heurtevent (Maiden 3yo Colts & Geldings, 1,900m / 9.5 furlongs AWT), August 10, Deauville

Owner: Mme Georges Sandor
Trainer Pascal Bary
Breeder: Georges Sandor
Rider: Stéphane Pasquier

Twice second this season, having started last year with a fourth place on this all-weather track in November, Mandaar (Canyon Creek) did not manage to win before the passing of his breeder George Sandor. He did it quite easily here, as a worthy favourite under the colours of Mrs Jacqueline Sandor (by jockey Stéphane Pasquier on the picture). Mandaar beat Sa Sal (Kalatos), always close to the leaders, by two and a half lengths.

The colts took more than 2.6 seconds longer than the fillies to complete the race, but Mandaar finished very fast while the girls were quite tired in the end after a mad beginning. The leaders here fell below the 11-second mark in the second last furlong.

Mandaar's dam is the unraced Madeleine's Blush (Rahy), bred in the USA by the late Allen Paulson. She is out of one of his greatest European champion mares, French 1,000 Guineas winner Madeleine's Dream (Theatrical), trained by François Boutin for the owner of Cigar and Arazi. Her own dam L'Attrayante (Tyrant) also won the French classic, plus the Irish one and many others in the States.

Madeleine was the name of Paulsons wife. Madeleine's Blush went on sale at the 2005 Sandor dispersal but wasn't sold at $9,000. Her first Frenchbred foal was Maintop (Royal Academy), but the best is Menardais (Canyon Creek), a Listed-winner who won 14 races and earned nearly € 400,000.

ARIKI (F3), GB by Dark Angel ex Steer by the Stars (Pivotal)

Prix de Courbépine (Maiden 3yo Fillies, 1,900m / 9.5 furlongs AWT), August 10, Deauville

Owner: Brendan Jon Lindsay
Trainer: Nicolas Clément
Breeder: M. & Mme Brendan Lindsay
Rider: Thomas Trullier

A keen Precious Lady (Lawman) immediately took the lead at a good pace and followed by Ariki (Dark Angel), she went a few lengths ahead of a field led by Tigrette (Tigron). The riders of the two leading fillies, however, settled down in the last turn and the followers were back on their tail to turn into the last straight. Ariki still had plenty in the tank and she took off again with her Thomas Trullier, claiming 7lbs, to find herself out of reach. It was the right choice since the filly won by three and a half lengths, Lucky Doe (Dawn Approach), one of the most experienced runners in the race, finishing well in second.

Ariki started her career with a fifth-place on the same course and distance in July when she just stayed on behind the leaders with blinkers on already.

Bred by her owner in Britain, she is out of Steer By The Stars (Pivotal), whom the Lindsay bought with this filly in her flanks for £ 160,000 at the end of 2015. Since then, her first foal, Never Back Down (Kodiac) won four sprints across the Channel, including two on the all-weather. He was sold for £ 35,000 at auction in July.

SANTURIN (C2), FRA by Sommerabend ex Semina (Mamool)

Prix de Val Séry (Unraced 2yo colts and geldings, 1,300m / 6.5 furlongs AWT), August 10, Deauville

Owner: Stall Schloss Benrath
Trainer: André Fabre
Breeders: Gunter Muller & Hans Klober
Rider: Antoine Hamelin

Eleven beginners and a very indecisive race since the first five getting into the straight were still in contention one out! Finally, Santurin (Sommerabend) wasd the most resolute after shadowing a front-running Raamez (Sea the Stars). He finished a neck ahead of King Pacha (Acclamation), who ran next to the leader, the favourite Wally's Kokonut (Olympic Glory) finishing third beaten a neck in front of Raamez ...

Long raced on 10 furlongs and more in Germany before finally revealing her ability by winning a Listed-event over 7 furlongs, Santurin's dam Semina (Mamool) has for a second dam Secret Energy (Alwuhush), who is also the second dam to Santiago (Highest Honor), winner of the Mehl-Müllens Rennen (Gr2), the German Two Thousand Guineas.

LOUVE DREAM (G3), (Ire) by Kingman ex Agathe Rare (Sadler’s Wells)

Prix de Coupesarte (Maiden 3yo colts & geldings, 1,300m/6.5 furlongs AWT), August 8, Deauville

Owner: Eckhard Sauren
Trainer: Carina Fey
Breeder: Dayton Investments
Rider: Eddy Hardouin

After a good start, Louve Dream (Kingman) was a bit keen and he took the lead from Socratic (Invincible Spirit). Still well in front going into the stretch, he held off Socratic on his inside, but he long seemed threatened, especially as Momtathil (Oasis Dream) loomed purposedly about two out. In the end, however, both challengers were worn down and Masetto (Mayson) came up the last, closing fast to fail only by ¾ of a length behind a very brave winner.

Owned by Eckhard Sauren, Louve Dream ran six times before, since April, and, like Alkawthar, winner of the fillies maiden, it was a first test on the All-Weather track.

The colt was paid € 75,000 at the October Arqana sales by his trainer Carina Fey. He was gelded late last year. His full brother is registered for the next Arqana August sales. Even before this update, the siblings had gained value since their dam Louve Nationale (Galileo), a sister of Loup Breton (Anabaa), a Group 1-placed in France and a Group 2-winner in the USA, is also the dam of Ligne d'Or (Dansili), winner of the Prix de Flore (Gr3).

There is also a 2-year-old colt by Lope de Vega who was exported to Britain and was sold there for £ 45,000 to Ballylinch Stud. He is not declared in training.

ALKAWTHAR (F3), USA by Data Link ex Wish On (Grand Slam)

Prix de Coudray (Maiden 3yo fillies, 1,300m/6.5 furlongs), August 8, Deauville

Owner: Abdullah al Maddah
Trainer: Pia Brandt
Breeder: Adèle Dilschneider
Rider: Théo Bachelot

It was Alkawthar (Data Link)'s eighth race and she had already finished three times 2nd, twice in the spring at Maisons-Laffitte over 6 furlongs, then once at Compiegne in June, over 7 furlongs. This time, the Abdullah al-Maddah-owned filly, who was entered in The Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French One Thousand Guineas, Gr1), was running for the first the time over the all-weather track. She seemed to like it since she won from start to finish, even though she kind of stalled in the end.

Gemma Blue (Mastercraftsman), always trailing her, came back at ¾ of a length with a 3rd-placed Exclusivité (Elusive City) also closing in the end.

Alkawthar is American. Purchased $ 47,000 a yearling at Keeneland, she went on sale again in Ocala, Florida, for the breeze up in April 2018, and her current owner paid her $ 120,000 then. Her Verrazzano sister goes on sales at Keeneland in September. Their brother Maybe So (More Than Ready) won a US-Listed event. Their third dam, Candlestick (El Baba) is a sister to Starlet Game (The Minstrel), who was 2nd in the Criterium d'Evry (L) in 1991, beaten by a filly named Absurde, who went on to finish second for breeder/owner Chryss O'Reilly in the Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr1) won by the champion Marling.

HOPEFUL (G2), FRA by Motivator ex Monst (Monsun)

Arqana Prix de Crévecoeur (Unraced 2-year-old colts & geldings, 1,500m / 7 1/5 furlongs), August 6, Deauville

Owners: Wertheimer & Frère
Trainer: Carlos Laffon-Parias
Breeders: Wertheimer & Frère
Rider: Thomas Trullier

The Crévecœur colts took 1/10 of a second less than the Marettes fillies to run the race's 1,500m. The winner Hopeful (Motivator) came by the leaders on the outside, giving cover to his more fancied stablemate Pao Alto (Intello), but he stayed on and partly thanks to his apprentice 5lbs allowance, he kept half a length on him, while the 3rd-placed Asharann (Zoffany) finished well three lengths down.

There has been a traffic incident going into the turn, and Charlesquint (Showcasing), a good 8th, was the main casualty there.

The winner is a homebred Wertheimer but his dam Monst (Monsun) was bought by the famous brothers for € 200,000 as a yearling in Deauville. She's out of the Argentinian Gr1 winner First One (Southern Halo), out of the classic winning Argentinian mare Fontemar (Babor). The filly proved rather disappointing since she had to travel to Nîmes to finally score, and she didn't do much better as a broodmare before this week: her previous foal Architect (Anodin) finished 2nd in a Class 2 race on Monday at Clairefontaine, and Hopefulwins his maiden the following day!

Both have been gelded though. Monst was sold last Winter at the Arqana Breeding sale for € 25,000 € to Ralf Ernst, in foal to New Bay.

SAVARIN (F2), JPN by Deep Impact ex Sarafina (Refuse to Bend)

Arqana Prix des Marettes (Unraced 2-year-old fillies, 1,500m / 7 1/5 furlongs), August 6, Deauville

Owner: Masaaki Matsushima & Teruya Yoshida
Trainer: André Fabre
Breeder: Shadai Farm
Rider: Pierre-Charles Boudot

Savarin (Deep Impact) was apparently not the most impressive of the eight unraced fillies gathered for the renewal of a famous Deauville beginners' race, but she crushed her rivals all the same. Up in the third line along the rail, behind the pacesetting Like a Charm (Charm Spirit) and Dream and Do (Siyouni), who was a bit tight early on, Savarin took her time to accelerate but she easily overcame the two preceding fillies to win by a length and a half in front of Dream And Go, Like A Charm and La Norma (Siyouni), who finished well.

The race is one of the most famous juvenile events of the season. It is now run over 1,500 metres, instead of the traditional mile, since 2015. La Cochère and Senga finished first and second of the 2016 edition and became classic winners the following year.

Savarin is very well bred since her sire, the recently deceased Deep Impact, is one of the best horses of all times in Japan. Her dam Sarafina (Refuse to Bend), is an Aga Khan homebred who won the Prix Saint-Alary and the Prix de Diane at 3, then the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud the following year. She was bought by the colossal Japanese breeder Teruya Yoshida, who bred this filly, and also her full brother Geniale, sold in 2015 for 1.3 million dollars to Masaaki Matsushima, also co-owner of Savarin.

Geniale notably won the Prix Messidor (Gr3) in France last year after starting his successful career in Japan. Savarin, however, starts directly in France, and how!

WARZUZU (F2), (IRE) by War Front ex Lady Zuzu (Dynaformer)

Prix du Mézeray (2yo Maiden Fillies, 1,500m / 7 1/2 furlongs), August 2, Deauville

Owners: Wertheimer & Frère
Trainer: Christophe Ferland
Breeder: Wertheimer & Frère
Rider: Maxime Guyon

Beaten a neck after a long struggle for her La Teste debut, the local racecourse of her trainer Christophe Ferland, Warzuzu (War Front) led all the way this time. Well ridden, she repelled every challenger, beating Bionic Woman (Lope de Vega) and the favourite Vienna (Showcasing), not very lucky in running, and Anobar (Anodin), who went by her the whole way but couldn't quite keep up in the end.

Warzuzu is the first foal out of Lady Zuzu (Dynaformer), bought $ 2.35 million by the Wertheimers carrying this filly at the Fasig-Tipton breeding sales. Lady Zuzu was Group 3-placed at 2 and 3 for trainer D. Wayne Lukas. She is a sister of the good turf horse Optimizer (English Channel), whose dam Indy Pick (A.P. Indy) is a sister of the classic mare Finder's Fee (Storm Cat).

Lady Zuzu also gave a colt by Galileo and another by Intello.

TROISLUS (C2), FRA by Siyouni ex Resistance (King’s Best)

Prix d’Etreham (2yo Maiden Colts & Geldings, 1,500m / 7 1/2 furlongs), August 2, Deauville

Owner: Patrick Hugh Betts
Trainer: Stéphane Wattel
Breeder: Écurie Skymarc Farm
Rider: Théo Bachelot

Sixth for his debut in the beginners' race won Thunderspeed over 7 furlongs on this course beating five of the eleven runners gathered again here, Troislus (Siyouni) had travelled outside that day, without cover. However, he had not yielded to Veritas (Camelot), who was, however, favourite this time.

The scenario was not very different this time because Troislus galloped in front alongside Le Bayou (Dabirsim), but no one could reach him after he had taken over the other leaders. Le Bayou held on in third behind Bolero dei Grif (Sakhee's Secret), who benefited from a good trip. Veritas has never been threatening after galloping at the back of the field. Wally (Siyouni) was very unlucky by the rail.

Winner in December at 2, Troislus' dam Resistance (King's Best) won two times again the next season in three outings only. Troislus is her first foal. She aldo gave a Wootton Bassett colt bred by Chryss Goulandris' Skymarc Farm, and consigned at the Arqana v2 sale this summer. Bloodstock agent Richard Venn bought Troislus € 50,000 at last October's sales in Deauville.
