Second for his ParisLongchamp debut, Lauenen (Canford Cliffs) showed the way this time and took off in time to avoid a timely return of the unlucky beginner Lauderdale (Siyouni), who struggled to get out of the pack after a slow start. The George Strawbirge colt finished well about a length in second.

Lauenen was sold for €38,000 to his trainer Jean-Claude Rouget at the Osarus yearlings sale. He was consigned by his joint-breeder Mathieu Daguzan-Garros' Haras des Granges and races now for a partnership led by Daniel-Yves Trèves, just like his dam Peppy Miller (Iffraaj), bought for € 55,000 at the same Osarus sales and sold after a brief career -and a win at Mont-de-Marsan- in Deauville for a mere € 13,000. Her dam, the unraced Shining Vale (Twilight Agenda), is a sister to the America,-bred German champion Walzerkoenigin (Kingmambo), dam of the German Derby winner Wiener Walzer (Dynaformer) and of the good stayer Walzertakt (Montjeu), now a sire in France.

KARANKAWA (F2), USA by Karakontie ex Southbound (Southern Image)

Bought for $22,000 at Keeneland last year, Karankawa (Karakontie) is the second Karakontie (Bernstein) winner in Franc only 12 days after Ketil (read below). She was ridden behind the leaders and fought hard all the way to deny Digression (Gleneagles), who seemed to have the edge about 50 yards out but nevertheless lost by a nose.

Karankawa had never raced before, contrary to her unlucky rival, who had already run twice. The winner was bred in the USA and she's a sister to Sweetsoutherndame (Colonel John), a stakes-placed in Canada. She was unsold as a weanling at Keeneland before Paul Magee stepped in at the yearlings sale on the same venue, for woner Bryan Lynam.

ONESTEPFORWARD (G3), POL by Alandi ex Ombreletta (Royal Court)

Always close to the pace, Onestepforward (Alandi) took the last bend behind Indiana Jones (Blue Brésil), and was ridden between the last two hurdles to take over in the run-in and win by two lengths over Indiana Jones and the AQPS Général en Chef (Martaline), who stayed on in 3rd after looking like a winner.

Onestepforward is a new finding of trainer/owner Guillaume Macaire in Poland after Tunis, who's now a popular young sire in haras de Cercy after battling with Master Dino on a few occasions at the highest level at Auteuil. Bred in Poland by Michal Romowski, Onestepforward is out of the unraced dam Ombreletta (Royal Court). His second dam Ombrelia (Diaxieland) won one of the main stakes in the country, the Nagroda Kozienic, raced at Warsaw over 13 furlongs at the time.

The winner's sire Alandi (Galileo) is an Aga-Khan bred stayer, winner of the Prix du Cadran (Gr1), now siring in Poland.

MKFANCY (C2), FRA by Makfi ex Fancy Green (Muhtathir)

4th behind the leaders, Mkfancy (Makfi) veered to the outside coming off the bend and really took over his challengers in the last furlong to win by three lengths over Firstman (Zoffany) who was kept in the rear early on and also went to the stands side. Third-placed Jean Racine (Rajsaman) just held on on the same ground as the 14 runners were running in a charge over the whole width of the course.

Mkfancy had started his career on September 1st in the Prix de Fontenoy at ParisLongchamp by a third place, four lengths behind a potential French Criterium (Gr1) favourite Victor Ludorum, who won again since.

Mkfancy was entered in the 2018 October sale at Arqana but was finally withdrawn. His elder sister Fancytastic (Mastercraftsman), however, made y €34,000 at the same venue in 2016. She was still racing for her breeder though, Abdullah al Maddah, before being transferred to her trainer Pia Brandt, who in turn passed her on to Isabelle Gallorini,n a jumps trainer in Royan, after she'd won a Hurdle race at La Teste last Summer.

Fancytastic and Mkfancy's dam, Fancy Green (Muhtathir), won for her debut at Compiegne for trainer her owner-breeder Abdullah al Maddah, and trainer Éric Legrix.

BLACK FEVER (F2), FRA by Invincible Spirit ex Demurely (Galileo)

Black Fever (Invincible Spirit) dominated easily in the last furlong, beating the favourite Ebayra (Distorted Humor), who came from the rear but couldn't keep up with the winner in the later stages.

The Haras Voltaire-owned filly had started with a 6th place in Deauville, in the Arqana Prix de Lisieux over 6 furlongs, went on to finish 2nd at 9 lengths behind classic hope Khayzaraan, even though she'd beat her for their common first steps.

Black Fever was paid €270,000 at the Arqana October sale by Broadhurst Agency (Laurent Benoît). Her Le Havre brother is in the Tattersalls October sale, and this is a timely update he's got here. Écurie des Monceaux bought the dam Demurely (Galileo) for £ 600,000 at Tattersalls in 2013. She's outy of Solo de Lune (Law Society), who raced for Strauss and gave Cerulean Sky (Darshaan), a Saint-Alary (Gr1) winner, dam os the classic performers Moonstone (Dalakhani) and L’Ancresse (Darshaan).

The mare was sold in foal to the Le Havre colt in December 2017 to Blandford Bloodstock Ltd for €480,000.

RELIABLE SON (G3), FRA by Reliable Man ex Hot Fudge (Lomitas)

Reliable Son (Reliable Man) showed the way from start to finish in this 5 runners affaire and even though he looked under big pressure two out, he was the only one still going strong at the furlong pole. He won by one and a half length beating Boreas (Galileo), who tried to challenge him while sticking to the rail, the beginner Carpio (Lope de Vega), who didn't start well, a fast-finishing Variyann (Shamardal) and Royalist (Intello), all packed at the post.

Reliable Son was coming back after a 103 days lay off. Twice second and twice third in the Spring, he was gelded after that in June.

His dam, the Swedish-bred Hot Fudge (Lomitas), won the Danish Oaks and was placed 3rd in the Norwegian Oaks. She tried to get some black type at Listed level but only managed a 4th place in Baden-Baden over 11 furlongs at 6. She was out of Christian Church (LInamix), in training with Jean-Claude Rouget bred by Jean-Luc Lagardère.

Hot Fudge gave seven foals. Reliable Son is her third winner. A 2yo Olympic Glory filly is trained by Pia Brandt, another by Pride of Dubai was bred in 2018.

CHEF D’ORCHESTRE (G2), FRA by Music Master ex Mandy Layla (Excellent Art)

Always pointed in the leading group, Chef d’Orchestre (Music Master) took over entering the last straight and went away in the last 300 yards to win comfortably, one good length ahead of Plaza de Vega (Lope de Vega) as the favourite Mille Fois Merci (Galileo) was again disappointing in third after waiting long in the rear.

Chef d'Orchestre had only started his career with a 4th place at Le Touquet in August over 6.5 furlongs.

The winner is out of Mandy Layla (Excellent Art), a sprinting mare who raced 23 times and won 4 races in Britain. She also gave a Coach House colt who was sold £9,500 at the Tattersalls Horses in training sale last year after his two wins.

WANDERWELL (F3), GB by New Approach ex Ama (Storm Cat)

Wanderwell (New Approach) was the best finishing filly of this heated maiden race, beating Aigrette Motette (Lope de Vega), one of the most prominent challengers, and Kaiserperle (Montmartre), who had been one of the main contenders earlier in the straight. Trained by André Fabre for Godolphin, Wanderwell still had to take sideways to look for her first win. She went to Le Touquet, a minor seaside track, in August and yet had to oblige in second. It was a bit of a come back since she'd fallen three months prior at Saint-Malo, in the West.

Wanderwell's dam, Ama (Storm Cat), is a daughter of the great mare Miesque (Nureyev). She was bred by the Niarchos who entrusted her to Jonathan Pease, who was able to get her to finish second twice in that many races. She was then bought £1.8m at Tattersalls by Godolphin. None of her first five foals achieved wonders though, and she went back in the sale 10 years after only to be awarded to her breeders, Flaxman Holdings, for £160,000, full of New Approach.

Wanderwell was her last foal for Godolphin.

KETIL (C2), USA by Karakontie ex Matroshka (Red Ransom)

All eyes were on Océan Atlantique (American Pharoah), a €1.1m Coolmore purchase at the Aerqana breeze ups. Indeed, the André Fabre-trained juvenile passed the post 4.5 lengths ahead of the field, but Ketil (Karakontie) was still in front of him and registered Karakontie (Bernstein)'s first French win here.

Ketil followed the leaders all the way and took over when they started to fade, holding off Ocean Atlantique, who took some time to reach momentum and only pushed his rival to the wire.

Icatcher (Manduro) finished well in front of the field with an also fast-finishing Harmysian (Lope de Vega) in fourth.

Ketil was bought by the Niarchos at the Deauville sales, when consigned by Haras de Grandcamp, for €50,000. His Flintshire brother made €22,000 as Equine Advisory Agency (Thomas Richardson) bought him as a weanling at the 2018 Arqana breeding sale. The dam, the unraced Matroshka (Red Ransom), is a granddaughter of sire Invincible Spirit's sire through the « Diane » winner Rafha (Kris). Before Ketil, she gave three winners, none of them reaching an 80lbs rating.

WAAHAAT (F2), FRA by Siyouni ex Sandy Girl (Footstepsinthesand)

Waahaat (Siyouni) came fast to take the lead early despite her 11 draw in this 16-strong field and she was never challenged in the final straight, winning by over two lengths on the bridle. She beat Seachange (Siyouni), who had trailed her along the rail all the way but was unable to keep up with her in the final 3 furlongs. Also noted close to the pace, Vadalda (Nathaniel) finished third.

4th-placed Land of Maybe (American Pharoah) will probably improve a lot after that, and so will the 5th-placed Merci Pour Tout (Evasive), who finished well from the rear.

Waahaat is owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum but she was bred in France by Jean-Pierre Dubois and sold at Tattersalls for £250,000 by European Sales Management, a joint venture of haras des Capucines and haras d’Étreham. Her full sister, on the other hand, was unsold at €145,000 at the latest Arqana sales.

Waahaat's dam Sandy Girl (Footstepsinthesand) is a sister to the champion race mare Stacelita (Monsun). She won three consecutive races at 3, over 9 furlongs at Lyon (AWT) and Saint-Malo, and finally over a mile at ParisLongchamp for her last appearance.

She gave three winners since then, aged 7, 5 and 3, but none of them is in training today.

LE BERRY (G3), FRA by Gemix ex Kalberry (Kaldounevees)

The grey gelding Le Berry (Gemix), the favourite, came by the leaders outside in the last turn as Grace à Dieu (Wootton Bassett) was still in the lead leading Surely Motivated (Motivator). Between the last two jumps, these three were still in contention for the first prize but the latter gave up pretty soon. Then started a short struggle between the two remaining beginners -even though the entire colt Grace à Dieu had already run four times over the flat-  before Le Berry took over in the run-in, winning by six lengths, four lengths in front of Elmadam (Martaline), who finished well to beat Surely Motivated.

Le Berry's dam Kalberry (Kaldounevees) was 4th in a Prix de Flore (Gr3) for her breeder, Countess Decazes. Gemix, the winner's sire, was racing for Gemini Stud, co-owner of the grey with Mrs. Decazes.

The first foal out of Kalberry, Berryville (Poliglote), won the Grand Prix de Pau Chase (Gr3) twice after finishing 3rd in the Derby de l’Ouest. It is the same family than Melbourne Cup (Gr1), Caulfied Cup (Gr1) and Hong Kong Vase (Gr1) winner Dunaden.

SANGENNARO (G3), FRA by Poliglote ex Caterina (Maresca Sorrento)

Always next to the front runners in the first lot of the Prix Finot 3yo Beginners Hurdle race (L), Sangennaro (Poliglote) fought hard to repel Siège (Born To Sea), who came by him in the run-in by the stands rail, as Gemystory (Gemix), who'd made his mover between the last two hurdles in the centre, was also finishing well on his own. the latter would eventually seize the second place, a neck behind the winner and a head in front of Siège.

Sangennaro was bred by his owner Frédéric Bianco, and he had been entered in 5previous hurdle races since June at Clairefontaine and Dieppe, but he waited for better grounds to make his first trip to the races.

His dam Caterina (Maresca Sorrento), also bred by Frédéric Bianco, won twice at 4 at Auteuil and Dieppe. Sangennaro is her first foal, before a Masked Marvel colt.

Chanel du Berlais (Saint Preuil), Caterina's dam, failed each of her three attempts to win but she's out of Chica Bonita (Badayoun), 2nd dam to champions Nikita du Berlais (Poliglote) and Bonito du Berlais (Trempolino).

YOUMNA (C3), FRA by French Fifteen ex Enfant Modèle (Peintre Célèbre)

It was a 7th trial for Youmna (French Fifteen), who ran first in March and finished 2nd over 9,5 furlongs. Since then, he was 2nd three other times and twice third, always over 1m1/2. This time, Pierre-Charles Boudot deliberately set the pace and took off early in the straight to prevent any of his rivals to come back. Youmna won by 2 1/2 lengths over the German filly Guardian Fay (Soldier Hollow), who now counts three 2nd places …

Youmna is the fourth foal out of Enfant Modèle (Peintre Célèbre) and her first winner. The dam was bred by the Aga Khan but the family was first managed by Lagardère since she's out of Sage et Jolie (Linamix), a Prix de Malleret (Gr2) winner for the French breeder-owner, and a daughter of the great Saganeca, who's also the second dam to another famous horse of the hour, Arc fancy Japan.

OXALIS (C2), (IRE) by Invincible Spirit ex Lady of Shamrock (Scat Daddy)

A beginner in a maiden race with more experienced rivals, Oxalis (Invincible Spirit) still acted very professionally to win this with ease, leading all the way to take off two out without any foe challenging. He won by three and a half lengths over Sky Power (Stormy River), who had followed by the rail. Another beginner, Algiers (Shamardal) completely missed the start and bucked a couple of times after that but he came back in style to finish 6th.

Oxalis is the 3rd foal out of Lady of Shamrock (Scat Daddy), an American mare bought for $2m at Keeneland in 2013 after winning two Gr1s Stateside on dirt.

Her first foal, Silent War (War Front), won his only race at 2 in Maisons-Laffitte, beating Environs, a sister to the good Delaware. After Oxalis, she gave a Galileo filly and a Frankel colt.

BIONIC WOMAN (F2), IRE by Lope de Vega ex Burning Heights (Montjeu)

In her first race, Bionic Woman (Lope de Vega) was brave enough to hold on in 2nd after galloping wide in front. This time, however, she took her time to reach momentum but proved irresistible after that in the last two furlongs, holding a fast La Venus Espagnola (Siyouni) in check all the way to finally score by one and a half lengths, with the third-placed Ladysane (Dabirsim) two lengths behind.

Bionic Woman was sold £800,000 at Tattersalls last October. She's a full sister to the Gr3-winning Blue de Vega (Lope de Vega) whose dam Burning Heights (Montjeu), was only placed in France in a short career but is closely related to the champion race mare Borgia, a full sister to Bionic's 2nd dam.

Having let Days Dream (Martaline) and the favourite Sacrée Fame (Fame and Glory) lead the race early on, Massila (Barastraight) took over in the backstretch when the pacemakers started to slow down and was never challenged after that, winning by twelve lengths over Flèche Rouge (Crillon) and Fragil Has (Rail Link), themselves 15 lengths in front of the field.

Owned by the Talhouët-Roy's Haras des Sablonnets, and Benoît Gabeur, the filly's out of My Fair Lady (Poliglote), four times a winner over jumps orginating from the family of the good chaser Roi Mage (Poliglote).

Massila's Walzertakt brother was sold as a weanling to Stow Stud for € 24,000 at the Osarus Maisons-Laffitte sale in November. A Night Wish was bred this season.

MINUTY (F2), FRA by Charm Spirit ex Galaxidi (High Chaparral)

Fifth for her debut over 7.5 furlongs in the Prix du Mézeray, then third over 7f thirteen days later, again in Deauville but on softer ground, Minuty (Charm Spirit) finally made it at Chantilly over the straight 6f trip.

Her 10 draw had her held up at the back of the field and her rider had to move early to get her to stay in contact but she went on nicely passing to the stands to pursue Be Ahead (Dream Ahead), who tried to escape early. On the stands side, Zaccapa (Muhaarar) was also looming into contention, but in the last hundred yards, Be Ahead giving in, Minuty easily passed and stood out of reach of Zaccapa, second at two lengths, another length ahead of Be Ahead.

Minuty is the fourth foal out of Galaxidi (High Chaparral), who finished second for her debut in April at 3 and went straight to the Saint-Alary (Gr1), ending up 4th at only 2.5 lengths of the champion filly Sarafina. She ran twice again and finished twice in second place before entering stud.

Galaxidi gave two winners before Minuty, Comme J'Aime (Motivator), a filly sold €13,000 at Aqana's Autumn Sale last year, and recently out of training after failing in a St. Jean-de-Monts claimer, and New Hero (Tamayuz), the winner of three consecutive handicaps last winter at Marseilles and Cagnes-sur-mer.

Galaxidi then gave a Rajsaman colt and another colt by Motivator.

DAYYAN (G2), FRA by Dabirsim ex Daraa (Cape Cross)

Fourth for his debut in July at Bad Harzburg over 6f, then in Cologne over 7f, the gelding Dayyan (Dabirsim) was bred in France but he is trained in Germany by Uwe Schwinn (on the right on the photo), based in Beckingen in the Saar, about ten kilometres from the French border.

A slowly starter this time, yet pretty keen, he got closer to the rail and was kept at in rear while the favourite Hernan (Bated Breath) was immediately in the front row.

At the stands, the rider Maxim Pecheur moved out Dayyan and began riding him while Be My Day (Zebedee) seemed to have plenty in the tank and was diving out to make his move. Hernan could no longer make progress but wasn't giving in either.

One out, Dayyan hesitated to dive between the rail and Be My Day, who could not really hold him though, and the winner finally dared to sprint between and soon got rid of his rival.

Dayyan is the first winner out of Daraa (Cape Cross), who only won once, for her 2-year debut. She went on sale several times, as a yearling at Tattersalls where she reached £ 28,000, then a year after her first win and after her last failure, when Catridge Farm Stud bought her for £ 6,500, a year before reselling her for £ 33,000 full of Royal Applause. She could not reach € 10,000 a year later in Arqana full of Silver Frost, but was paid € 9,000 by Artemis Bloodstock (the same team as Haras de Saint-Arnoult, namely Larissa Kneip and Sandrine Grevet) in February 2017, when in foal to Dabirsim, that is to say of Dayyan.

Unsold as a yearling at Arqana, the colt went on sale at the breeze-ups in Baden Baden last May, where Uwe Schwinn bought him for a mere € 1,500.

Daraa is out of the Listed-winner Guarantia (Selkirk), sister of the 1m4f Gr3 winner Laaheb (Cape Cross) whose dam is a sister to champions Luso, Warrsan and other Needle Gun ...

Dayyan's own sister, born a year earlier, was sold € 57,000 to Arqana at the 2018 summer sale to Federico Barberini. A girl from Sommerabend is to follow.

PAO ALTO (C2), FRA by Intello ex Peaceful Love (Dashing Blade)

Sold €160,000 as a yearling at Arqana, Pao Alto (Intello) just failed against stablemate Hopeful in the Arqana Prix de Crévecœur at Deauville for his first time out. He seemed outpaced at the distance but came back in style once he'd reached momentum to finish second, beaten half a length. His rival is bound to run in the Prix des Chênes (Gr3) now.

Pao Alto's Wootton Bassett was sold €190,000 at Deauville to Broadhurst Agency (Laurent Benoît) last Summer.

Their dam Peaceful Love (Dashing Blade), a Gr3 winner at 3 in Germany, already gave Fort Hastings (Aragorn), a Gr3-placed at 2. A Shalaa filly was bred this season.

Fifth beaten about three lengths by Savarin for her debut at Deauville, in a typically hot Arqana Prix des Marettes where she ran a bit green, Greenland (War Front) was much more advanced this time as she took off in the last two furlongs to win by 5 lengths. She was timed 22’’71 in this last, lonely 2 furlongs bit.

She's out of Daisy Devine (Kafwain), a 2013 Keeneland November $1.3m purchase, and a Fair Ground Oaks (Gr2) winner in the States. Her own dam is Devil’s Dispute (Devil’s Bag), a sister to the champion mare Banker’s Lady (Nijinsky II), a dual Gr1-winner.

Greenland's brother Moons of Jupiter (War Front) started his career with exactly the same results, but sooner.

After letting Wild Won (Muharaar) lead form the start, Astral Path (Muharaar) was able to sneak through when that pacemaker was no longer useful to her and passed inside Sweet Zen (Dabirsim) before holding her in control to the post, the gelding Ernesto de la Cruz (Wootton Bassett) finishing well in 3rd finissanta length and a half down, far ahead of the others.

The winner's brother is in the Tattersalls October sale. Their dam Stellar Path (Astronomer Royal) was also racing for Trevor Stewart, winning the Prix des Réservoirs (Gr3) at 2 before a good back career Stateside.

Not much suspens as soon as Victor Ludorum (Shamardal) passed top gear -or was it 2nd top gear?- in a beginners race won in 2016 by Arc fancy Waldgeist. Also he was ridden to keep up with the pace going into the last bend, he came by Twist (Pivotal) cantering and flew away to score by 3.5 lengths on the bridle …

Victor Ludorum is the fifth foal out of Antiquities (Kaldounevees), homebred by Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum and trained by André Fabre. Second in the Prix Cléopâtre (Gr3) for her second race only, she never won at this level and went to stud early at 4 years old. Victor Ludorum is her second Shamardal foal after Ancient History, also trained by Fabre and twice a winner at 3 before he was exported to Australia.

Antiquities is out of Historian (Pennekamp), a Listed winner in her first start at 3 in March and the sister to Street Cry (Machiavellian), a Breeders'Cup and Dubai World Cup winner, the sire of the great Winx.

Fast in the lead, Glengowan (Kingman) held off every challenger and won by a short neck, as Mille Fois Merci (Galileo) zeroed on her in the last strides after taking some time to gain momentum. The only British-trained in the race, the winner is out of Pink Damsel (Galileo), sold last year for £140,000 to Castle Hyde Stud in foal to Caravaggio after giving four foals, including a Zoffany filly born after Glengowan.

Pink Damsel, a winner of a single race, had herself been sold for £600,000 to Fitriani Hay as a yearling, mostly because she was out of the champion mare Riskaverse (Dynaformer), a multiple Gr1 winner in the States and the dam of Say (Galileo), an Irish Gr3 winner, also a Gr1 placed there.
